Second Life and Mesh Body Lag

Hamlet has an interesting article Well-Optimized Alternatives To Resource-Heavy Mesh Bodies For SL touching on the contentious debate going in Second Life as to how much lag mesh bodies are causing. The high polygon count in mesh bodies is the suggested cause of the lag.

We don’t have an obvious resolution to the argument. Nothing the non-techies can grasp. The techies stay out of the argument having learned one cannot argue with the ignorant as it is all opinion for them.

Recent technology changes have complicated the information on polygon counts and how they may affect your viewer’s performance. One complication is the shift from video card manufacturers bragging about polygons-per-second rendered to frames-per-second and now gigarays-per-second… Part of the reason for changing metrics is the marketing hype card makers introduce to sell more cards.

Second Life: Photo Backlighting

If you have a Flickr account, you know how popular photography is in Second Life. So, photo-how-to’s are popular too. Then there are the peeps with a bit of exhibitionist in their blood posting in, How does your avatar look today?

Hamlet just posted an article with a couple of video tutorials on backlighting in Second Life. See Cassie’s Clips: How To Use Backlighting & Projectors.

Hamlet is featuring videos by Cassie Middles (Flickr URL). The video shows how to use Cynefin’s Projection Lighting Kit (L$650) (Video below). Mixed in is how to use your Windlight settings and adjust the sun to get the lighting you want.

Cassie also made a video showing how to use the resulting image and improve it. Below. Continue reading

Second Life: Avatar Makeovers

Strawberry Singh has and article about new ‘makeover’ businesses appearing in SL, The Makeover Agency in Second Life. Hamlet Au has an article on how bad it is (in the classical sense of ‘bad’) that there are ‘makeover’ businesses in SL, Second Life Avatar Fashion So Confusing & Complicated There Are Professional Makeover Agencies.

iRL there are makeover businesses, promotions, and parties. iRL young people are taught how to dress and groom. With all the new tech there are possibilities our parents never thought of. My mom never wove lights into her hair… She never bought Halloween ‘cosmetics’, stage makeup, yes. Zombie cosmetics, no.

iRL part of the fun of being female is all the choices available in clothes and makeup. Choices to a bewildering level. And the rules of what actually works with what while often totally arbitrary are sacred and in some circles and must be broken in other circles with either likely to bring ridicule if improperly broken or followed. Second Life Bits 2018 w/40

Uploading Mesh – Beq Janus has an article on her blog explaining some of the esoteric aspects of understanding mesh uploading to Second Life™. See: Shedding light on Mesh uploading.

Beq is working on the Firestorm Viewer’s mesh upload panel. So, now is a good time to be providing her feedback and ideas you think would make the uploaded easier to use or understand.

The article also defines some of the terms in use in the uploader that you may have misunderstood. Some of those ‘the word means… Y but here we are using it to mean X’ type of things. Continue reading

Second Life Hair Fair 2018

I like the Hair Fair events. It is a charity and all… a good thing, but the changes in hair and styles from year to year are what fascinates me. This year there were 9 do’s I had to try on. Turns out two were must have’s. And one I really liked but couldn’t initially get to work.

Hair Fair 2018 is open and going… not crowded the two days I’ve been there. No problem getting in. However, you can’t tp around inside the regions. Any TP takes you back to the main landing point for that region, which I find way annoying as I cam-shop and like to double-click-tp when I see something I want to check out or when I want to make an LM.

The changes I see this year are; more appliers and more style options.

Hair Fair 2018 – EMO-tions SEYCHELLE

Catwa, Lelutka, and Omega seem to be the common appliers included. For my GA.EG Jennifer head the Omega applier for the hair base works. It and my relay for GA.EG are both needed.

Style options in the HUDs or separate style HUDs were more common this year. At least in the do’s I was interested in.

EMO-tions has a do I liked best, *SEYCHELLE*. I love the big hair look it provides. This is the only one I liked enough to spring for the FAT pack.

The Firestorm ACI for the hair is about 3.7k. It has 128kb of scripting in 2 scripts. It uses only ONE attachment point, Skull. I did not find any script removal option and the hair is no-mod. It comes with the Catwa, Lelutka, and Omega appliers. Includes the various color HUDs. The fat-pack includes multiple HUDs, not a single all-inclusive colors HUD. Continue reading

Big News for Slink Physique Original Peeps

Have you seen? Erratic, a Maitreya exclusive merchant, is thinking about making clothes for other bodies!

Strawberry Singh has the story in an article titled I’m feeling so Erratic. Plus, she made a video.

In the $L50 Friday event an Erratic L$50 top (Fat Pack) is on sale for multiple body styles including Hourglass and Original. I am interested in Erratic clothes for the Slink bodies. So, I ran down and bought a copy for the Original body.

The sales of this top will be the deciding factor in which bodies Erratic Rain plans to make clothes for in the future. So… if you want more Slink, visit and buy… the free market voting with its dollars… http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/LE%20LOOK/131/139/2001

Does Second Life have Grunge Clothes?

You may know grunge is a THING in computer modeling. It is easy to make perfect stuff that looks totally new. It takes some talent to age it and give it signs of wear and dirt. Those improving their creative skill seem to eventually try adding grunge to whatever they are creating.

A fascinating display of grungy, dirty, rusting things can be found in Second Life’s game The Wastelands. I’ve been exploring and playing in Wastelands, probably SL’s oldest and longest-running game, at least AFAIK. My problem is I feel overdressed. I more commonly dress for shopping, events, and clubs.

Razor Store 2018

There are numerous other role play games in SL set in the post-apocalyptic eras. However, in most SL role play areas of such eras, the women make high-end call-girls look like nuns.

I don’t have the clothes for a Wastelands look… The players I have seen go for a more probably real look. So, with my 55k inventory, I have nothing to wear… so sad… …and I have a bridge for sale in San Francisco. (Contact me in-world.)

It is true I literally have nothing I think works for Wastelands style… well, with my mesh body. I have made a classic body outfit that suffices. But, I hate it. So, I’ve been on a quest to find clothes I think work and that I like. I’m not going to take on the Walking Dead zombie look. Eck! There are plenty of those playing in Wastelands that favor that look, just not me. Continue reading

AvaStar and Slink March 2018

AvaStar is at version 2.3-1 released 17 January 2018 according to announcements in the Blender-AvaStar group. In the products page where I download the file, it is labeled 2.3-2. The release is called a bug fix. It has 10 bug fixes and 4 improvements. See the changelog here. Notice the Dev Kit manager…

Blender is currently at version 2.79a. The Blender download is here. The Portable version is the version I use so I can have multiple versions installed. I’ll explain why later.

Blender Download March 2018

Today I see Slink released an update to their Dev Kit for AvaStar. I find the email got to me yesterday 3/19. It tells me, “The bodies in these kits have been reworked from the ground up, for better geometry, more accurate weighting and better fit!” (Emphasis is theirs.)

Also, Slink Development now has a Discord Server for developers. The link is in the email. Siddean is available 9 to 5 Eastern Australian Time… Australia has 13 time zones… O.O  so… divide by 13 then 24 and multiply by… and turn the world around once… and that gives us 4pm to 12AM SLT/PT. Technically, they are 17 to 18 hours ahead of California, depending on Daylight Saving Time. If it is Monday here it is likely Tuesday there.

If it weren’t for the International Date Line they would be 5 to 6 hours behind California.  Continue reading
