Second Life Hair Fair 2018

I like the Hair Fair events. It is a charity and all… a good thing, but the changes in hair and styles from year to year are what fascinates me. This year there were 9 do’s I had to try on. Turns out two were must have’s. And one I really liked but couldn’t initially get to work.

Hair Fair 2018 is open and going… not crowded the two days I’ve been there. No problem getting in. However, you can’t tp around inside the regions. Any TP takes you back to the main landing point for that region, which I find way annoying as I cam-shop and like to double-click-tp when I see something I want to check out or when I want to make an LM.

The changes I see this year are; more appliers and more style options.

Catwa, Lelutka, and Omega seem to be the common appliers included. For my GA.EG Jennifer head the Omega applier for the hair base works. It and my relay for GA.EG are both needed.

Style options in the HUDs or separate style HUDs were more common this year. At least in the do’s I was interested in.

EMO-tions has a do I liked best, *SEYCHELLE*. I love the big hair look it provides. This is the only one I liked enough to spring for the FAT pack.

The Firestorm ACI for the hair is about 3.7k. It has 128kb of scripting in 2 scripts. It uses only ONE attachment point, Skull. I did not find any script removal option and the hair is no-mod. It comes with the Catwa, Lelutka, and Omega appliers. Includes the various color HUDs. The fat-pack includes multiple HUDs, not a single all-inclusive colors HUD.

Servers

The main channel was updated to version #18.09.20.519894. This version contains code for the Bakes On Mesh feature. None of this update is going to be apparent to users. Sort of infrastructure only changes.

My home region on the main channel did get an update today and shows the above as the running version.

The three RC channels will get version #18.09.24.519940. This is only listed as having ‘Internal Changes’.

I missed the meeting today to have lunch with a friend. So, a bit short on hard news.

Viewers

The main viewer has upgraded to version 5.1.9.519298. (Release Notes) Code name: Rakomelo. The previous update was in week #34.

There are some new features in this version; in People – Near By you can sort on recent arrivals, fixes group notices so – eliminating the behavior of if I sent one while you are writing one yours would be trashed, new server capabilities for fetching offline IM’s – this is supposed to make delivery more robust, and new capabilities for friend and group actions… So, is this the friends-list-not-sync’ing issue? Not sure…

Second Life Bits …and Sex – 2018 Week #38

SL Gossip

New World Notes has a big (lots of words) article, big for NWN, about the SL Secrets website, the owners getting banned, and the Second Life™ Governance Team… maybe writing the word ‘system’ rather than ‘team’ would be more accurate.

This ‘secrets’ site is one of those sites with things on it where we can never know the truth. It is all unverifiable they said versus the others said and one side is bound by privacy laws and can’t speak in their defense. Just the drama prone scenario politicians love. Sway the emotional…

Gossiping about Sam
Gossiping about Sam

If you don’t know, SL Secrets is a website where bullies, haters, and gossipers can go to create victims and dox them and troll readers. Snowflakes show up to whine and cry.

There is no way to vet the claims that show up there. So, it is all drama. Unfortunately, there is a market for it.

And SL banned the owners of the site… really!?!

Second Life News 2018 w39

Lots of interesting news and updates… I’ve combined information from the Third-Party Dev meeting and my regular Tuesday updates. There is normally about two working days between the Third-Party and Server-Scripting meetings. Not much changes in that time. So, I combined them.

Servers

No roll to the main channel. It will continue to run #18.09.04.519319.

The Forum Deploys post says the RC channel roll is to be determined. Rider Linden at the Server-Scripting UG says no RC packages are ready to roll out. We’ll find out Wednesday what actually happens.

He did however, provide a new server package update for EPP on the ADITI side.

He said, “It [EEP server update] will address some validations where FS had much larger ranges of values than the lab did.

I’ve dealt with a cloud speed issue that had annoyed me and I forgot to get in before we sent out the preview.

Oz Linden at the Friday Third-Party Dev UG announced they will be turning off the UDP Asset Fetch API’s in January. Most viewers no longer use them. But, there may be one or two that do… These API’s do not pass through the CDN servers so are slower and add more load to the region and asset servers.

Old viewers will likely break. Old as in like 4 years old.

Second Life: EEP Testing Begins

Enhanced Environment Project or EEP has begun testing (9/20/2018). The server-side code and inventory changes are only in place on Aditi, the preview grid. You also need the not-yet-project viewer. Which you can get here: OSX, Win-64, and Win-32.

These versions of the EEP viewer do NOT have the animesh code. However, the EEP enabled server code does have the animesh code. So, while you can see animesh animating in EEP regions you have to be using the Animesh RC viewer, which means you can’t see the EEP changes.

Confused? Think one or the other. Not both at the same time.

The region previously named Animesh1 is now named EEPTesting (URL).

Abuse Reports: What You Wanted to Know – 2018-09

Abuse Reports are a thing in Second Life™. But, not a lot is known about them. The typical Second Life user (resident) files them, gets an email saying we got your report, and that is about all they know. Thanks to privacy laws that is about all the Lab can tell us. What happens to the report or how an issue is resolved is a mystery to most residents.

We ‘old timers’ can tell the noobs, cranky, manipulative, haters, and the simple by their thinking and comments about how Abuse Reports are handled. Those groups are not mutually exclusive.

Kristin Linden is the supervisor of the five-person Governance Team. These are the people that read the Abuse Reports, check the evidence, and decide on what action is to be taken. They also moderate the SL Forum.

This last Tuesday (9/18) Kristin facilitated a meeting with the team and Second Life residents. I caught it on video. It is your opportunity to see-hear a discussion with the ENFORCERS…

I often make an index to the videos I post. I am not into that today. So, the most you’ll get is a summary.

The abuse team is about 5 people. Kristin describes it as five-ish, suggesting the number changes from time to time.

How many Abuse Reports are filed per day? Kristin didn’t have a number. Her estimate is about a 1,000 per week. It varies with what is happening in SL.
