Second Life: Viewer Problems

The Quick Graphics Viewer is out. Some people are having some problems with the viewer. A semi-clean install seems to fix the problem. So, what’s semi-clean install?

Hell Is Other People

Hell Is Other People

  • Restart your computer. Do NOT start the viewer.
  • Download the viewer from Second Life Download.
  • Find your install folder, usually C:\Program Files (x86)\SecondLifeViewer (Windows)
  • Delete it. This deletion will not erase your settings, cache, inventory cache, or chat logs.
  • Install the SL Viewer using the file you downloaded. The installer will say you already have it installed and ask if you want to install anyways. Yes.
  • Try it.

Second Life: Down Time

If you use the Preview/Beta Grid (ADITI) then you know that there were problems in ADITI this week. But, last week on Friday parts of the main grid went down. The operations people via April Linden have posted an article on what happened.

As part of the problem the Grid Status page went down. This is a tuning issue. That site normally has very few users. But, when the grid goes down users flood in and swamp the site. That is a common problem for hosting systems and there are ways to scale up to handle the load and down once demand passes. So, a future outage from overloading is now less likely.

When the Grid Status site is down there is a fall back: Twitter. See: SLGridStatus. This service stayed up. It has 12k+ followers.

I have the SL Grid Status in my favorites. Now I have added a Twitter link.

Norton AV Problem

Seems those using Norton have started having problems since Thursday’s (5/5/16) update. Seems they get double posts in chat and clicks don’t work first try.

Come to my sweet melody

Come to my sweet melody

The fix is to uninstall, run the Norton removal tool, and reinstall.

I am seeing lots of people in the Firestorm Support group asking for help with the issue. The problem happens on all viewers – LL viewer, Firestorm & Singularity have been tested.

In trying to dig up more information on the problem I found the SL JIRA was down… I couldn’t get a page to come up. But, then I tried Firefox, I can get the pages to come up in Firefox. Weird. I was using Chrome.

The report I was looking for is: BUG-11891 – Text duplicates in local and IM. Movement lags and sometimes clicking an item requires multiple clicks. Reading you’ll find that group announcements are posting twice too.

Kyle Linden posts the fix the Lab is going with.

Second Life: Aditi Inventory

Recently a fix for updating of our inventory in ADITI (preview/beta) grid rolled out. Some people are working with it now. I started writing about the changes being made this last December in: Second Life’s ADITI Inventory Update Change.

Curious....

Curious….

Today is the first time I’ve logged into Aditi since the change rolled out. So, my inventory has yet to update. I am hoping for a Friday morning update.  Continue reading

The truth about events…

Over on Mesh Body Addicts Lildaria has written an article with that title, Truth About Events (NSFW±). She touches on a pet peeve of mine, but her prime point is the problem we are starting to have… having… with events.

Menage A Trios

Menage A Trios

It seems that people are staying longer at events because they have a hard time getting in. If you leave, it may be a day or two before you can get in again. So, demos are downloaded and tried on while people are at the event. This puts a load on the region server and lags it more than their just being there.  Continue reading

Second Life: Updating Friends List Fails

This problem is/was happening pretty often. There is no user side fix. It requires a support ticket. The details follow. The error message is:

Login failed. Despite our best efforts, something unexpected has gone wrong. Please check status.secondlifegrid.net to see if there is a known problem with the service. If you continue to experience problems please check your network and firewall setup.

This error started appearing about last Tuesday, 12/19.  Continue reading

Zombie Eye in Second Life

It isn’t contagious. This problem passed quickly, I think. I didn’t run into it, so it is hard for me to know. But, it revealed another part of how the Second Life™ system works.

Knowledge is not everything...

Knowledge is not everything…

Backend Serve updates – there are a number of backend services needed to support Second Life. When the Lab is changing/updating them they generally provide no public notice, unless users need to change behavior, like refrain from transactions or rezzing no-copy items (which hopefully is changing).  Continue reading
