Second Life – Third-Party Dev’s UG Meeting 2017 w27

Very short meeting, 20± minutes. Nothing new. Just status updates.

The first subject was the JIRA spamming. For now, the JIRA is locked down, no comments. There is no idea how long it will take to build a spam block.

Viewers

The Alex Ivy viewer is out as the main viewer. It will update soon as a couple of problems were found. The Lindens are working on the launcher that figures out if it should load the 32 or 64-bit version of the viewer. They are also adding a setting to allow the user to override the automatic detection and force install of one or the other.

Second Life New Avatars 2017

Everyone is writing about the new Bento Avatars the Lab has added to the Viewer’s Library of starter avatars in inventory. This is the popular video for showing the avatars. Alicia Chenaux made the video and points out the problem of a new user selecting a full mesh avatar and changing clothes.

Second Life – Content Creation UG Meeting 2017 w27

The crowd at the Content Creation UG meeting is growing. I think that is mostly due to Medhue live-streaming the meetings.

These meetings are somewhat just small updates on the week-to-week progress the Lindens are making on Server-Side Baking and animated mesh objects, animesh. While there isn’t much new, we are learning more about animesh.

Vir Linden and crew are figuring out how to make animesh work. Group participants are thinking more about how they would like it to work. So, on both sides, the plan is getting more sophisticated. The meetings are interesting.

This week’s video runs about 1hr 8 minutes. I couldn’t hang out after the meeting. But the post-meeting can last an hour. It might go longer, but the Server Beta meeting starts and hour after, so several people leave to make that meeting.

Second Life News 2017 w27

Servers

The main channel continues to run #17.06.12.327066. But, they say there was a ‘bi-weekly’ restart. According to my ‘restart monitor’ in-world, the main channel region I live in was restarted 7/4 @ 08:05. So, they did. I think that is unusual for a holiday.

crystal blue persuasion

Blue Steel and Le Tigre continue to run #17.06.23.327344. There were no restarts.

Magnum was restarted and now runs #17.06.29.327400. This has the fix for the DJ song boards that stopped working. This is primarily an Operating System update.

Second Life – The 360 Viewer – Add Image Metadata

Taking 360 images is way easier with the new RC viewer. But, figuring out what to do with the image so you can see it is a serious PITA. I’ll give you HOW TO using Photoshop, which is pretty painless, and several other easy ways to make the image usable as a 360-image. The process works in most of the Adobe tools that allow you to access File Info.

First here is my first snapshot with the new viewer.

sl360 Picture – RAW Image

It kinda subtle (not), but you might notice this isn’t displaying as a 360-image. The problem is the metadata Flickr needs to know this is a 360 image. It is missing. The Lab is adding that part of the viewer code now. So, the latest version of the Linden 360-Viewer as I write this is version 5.1.0.506743. It stiches the image together for us. But, does not yet add the needed metadata.

Second Life – Copybot Viewer Debate

In case there is ANYONE in Second Life™ that doesn’t know what Copybot Viewers are, they are viewers made from the open source viewers, Linden and third-party, that have been altered to ignore Permissions. A person can use them to download ANYTHING… ANYTHING in Second Life.

There are hot issues in SL that carry loads of emotional energy. The issue of content theft, copyboting, is one of them.

At the last Content Creation UG meeting the subject of content theft, what the Lab does about it, and what CAN be done about it came up. It was a surprisingly calm and somewhat intelligent conversation. Still, the resident thief really annoyed me. Listen/watch the video. (60+ minutes) There are time marks for the various topics in the index below (last page) if you want to find just the juicy parts.

This video is from the last few minutes of Content Creation UG meeting of June 27, 2017. It then contuse for another 45+ minutes after the meeting.

The subject of content theft came up when Brooke Barmy asked the question,

“What is being done about the increase in marketplace copybot accounts, the reasoning behind not banning on the first offense, the reasoning behind not IP banning and the reasoning behind not taking [confiscating] the money back to Linden Lab?
