NVIDIA Drivers Update Problems

In the previous article, nVidia Update and Goodies, I talked about the release of a new 295.73 version driver. Now we are getting reports of nVidia Driver 295.73 causing Second Life Viewers to crash. The Firestorm/Phoenix Development team is reporting Firestorm users with GTX460 cards and 295.73 are having problems.

This is not the first time we have had problems with nVidia 460 cards. See: nVidia Driver GTX 460 Problems.

For Those using nVidia 450 and 460 cards it is advised they roll back to driver version 285.62 WHQL.

#SL Server news Week 9

This week we got a roll to the main channel. This update contains some voice improvements/fixes and I think the Phase I region crossing code.

Oskar is on vacation, so Maestro will be handling the news and meetings until Oskar is back.

Blue Steel & Le Tigre

These two channels get a maintenance package that has only bug fixes.

  • SVC-7631 – New rate throttle on llGiveInventory. The throttle was loosened to 2.5k events per 15 minutes, double the previous value.
  • SVC-7660– http_request()  fails to trigger on RC Magnum 12.01.27.248571
  • Fixed some other miscellaneous bugs, including a few crashers.

 Magnum

This channel has the region crossing project (Phase 1 Project) from last week, with an additional fix for a case in which some avatars would get stuck in a region and be unable to TP out.

Oz Answers TPV Policy Questions

Innula Zenovka post a link on SLUniverse to an Question and Answers page where Oz Linden answered residents questions about the new TPV Policy. Cummere Mayo start the thread here.

See: Questions about new TPV policy. (Questions only please.)

The most controlversal and misunderstood part of the policy is the idea of what is meant by SHARED EXPERIENCE. So, the number one question is: What is meant by shared experience?

The pertinent part of Oz’s answer is:

A shared experience change is one that modifies the definition of the elements that make up the virtual world, or how they behave, in such a way that users on other viewers don’t experience the same virtual reality.

This rule does not affect changes to rendering, user interface, or the controls a viewer offers for interacting with the world.

#SL Server-Scripting UG News Week 9

There is quite a bit of news this week. Some interesting stuff.

Encroachments

Andrew Linden has talked with the ‘land people,’ whoever they are, and the feature that allows one to return encroaching objects is ready. The feature has been in progress for weeks. Mesh objects created some problems apparently. The code is already rolled to the main grid and apparently has been there for some time. But, now it is ready to be enabled. Andrew is working on a script to go through and enable the feature on all the mainland regions.

Server Scripting Group

He is in process with the script. Exactly when it will be ready and the encroachment feature is enabled is not yet set. I would guess a week or two, but there is no way to know. However, once Andrew is sure his script works, he’ll tell the support team and give them an opportunity to make a blog announcement.

Firestorm-Phoenix Viewer Meeting

The meeting was planned to start at 2PM today. They are using 4 regions. One region is used for the speakers and camera crew and the other 3 for the audience.  But, the regions were phasing in and out while I was there. My SL Viewer was crashing, Firestorm crashed, Cool VL didn’t crash but I could not get in and the ‘Can’t Establish Connection’ errors from the FS/PH Support group, makes it impossible to do anything.

The stream from Treet.TV was never put up so no one could hook in and listen. But, the recording should be out Wednesday morning.

So, it would seem about 100 people is the limit for 4 regions…

If you think going into Rockcliffe 1 with 30 people will work, think again. While one can get in, the region is lagged to death and you can’t cam into voice range.

I’ll have to wait until tomorrow.

#SL Content/Mesh UG News Week 9

No meeting last week because of Presidents Day in the USA. This week’s meeting was short but had a good turnout.

Land Impact Costs

Vincent Nacon is trying to produce a info status for 3D Max users so they can see a mesh model’s weight while it is in 3D Max. There currently seems to be a disparity between the equation on the wiki and the one used by the viewer’s uploader. The Lindens are looking into it.

If anyone else has models that do not match with what you think they should be, get a copy to Charlar or Nyx. That of course assumes you know what you are doing and understand what the uploader is supposed to be doing well enough to recognize a problem…

Convex Hull Link Sets

I didn’t know what they were talking about… It is about changing a prim link set to use a convex hull for the set’s physics shape. In many cases the change will reduce Land Impact costs. When attempting to do this with a prim torus or sculpties it can drive the land impact up.
