Second Life News 2018 w04

We have a Deploys post this week. šŸ™‚

The main channel is not getting a roll. I’m showing my home region in the main channel as last restarting 1/16, last Tuesday.

All three RC channels are to get a rollout tomorrow. Version #18.01.17.511913. It is only described as ā€˜internal fixes’. There was no additional information available from the Server-Scripting UG Meeting.

There is work on region crossings by a resident. See the forum post Vehicles vs. sim crossings, why it’s so awful. Animats could use some help testing region crossing. Also, see the JIRA report SVC-22.

For builders, there is information that only the physics part of the road matters. The physics part of the road should be thick, vertically, and extend past the region edge by a couple of meters.

Today the No-Change-Window is closing. Developers with a bit of extra time over the holidays have finished up upgrades to the viewers they make. So, we have some new third-party viewers out. The Lab, of course, was closed over the holidays. So, not much news from them.

You can not escape it.

You can not escape it.

There is no Deploy post today. No rollout was expected for the main channel. Whether we will see one on the RC channels is still iffy.

I’ll download it and post my take later today.

Black Dragon has a New Year release, version 2.9.6. This is a bug fix release.

Christmas is sort of over. We are on to the post-Christmas battery buying days and OMG, why-did-they-think-I-would-wear-this returns…

Second Life is in a ā€˜No Change’ window. Many Lindens are off work this week. So, there is little news. There is however a Friday post from the Lindens in Featured News: Unboxing 2017 and Looking towards 2018 in Second Life! Worth a read.

without thinking of anything

Other than saying they will make Second Lifeā„¢ better in 2018, they don’t say much about what is coming. If you have been reading here you know of some things.

I used to do reviews of the events of of the year. It is a bunch of work. So, Inara is doing her year-in-review:Ā 2017 IN REVIEW – PART 1. I’ll leave that work to her. I am thinking of doing a review in video… If it proves fun, you’ll see it. If it turns into work, I’ll probably abandon the project. Continue reading

I think the Server-Scripting UG meeting is about the last UG meeting of the year.

Servers

There is no Deploys thread as of 10:45 AM. Nor has my region in the mainland been restarted. The last main channel restart was 12/12.

Simple pleasures

Simple pleasures

From the UG meeting we are told no new updates this week or next. So, all is quite… until 2018. Next UG is Jan 2. But, without a package on the RC channels a main channel roll is unlikely.

Simon tells us he is working a new shiny that we’ll see next year. O.O what a tease…

No sign of a Firestorm release. So, it is looking Like Whirly had the inside line and we won’t see a release until after the first of the year.

The rest of the third-party viewer field is quite too.

Last week the email update rolled out. So, if you haven’t verified your email address, you have stopped receiving your offline emails of IM’s.

Main Channel – We get an update to version #17.12.01.511131. All we know about this version is there are internal changes.

If you think about the usual pace of server development at the Lab, which we see when shinnies are in progress, and the months of ā€˜internal improvements’, where we aren’t seeing much change, you start to think the Lab is slacking off. I doubt that.

Since the community is complaining about content theft, we’ve had a few hints they are dealing with it, and we know the Lab doesn’t talk about security fixes… I assume there is quite a bit of work going on to fix exploits. But, we can’t really know.

RC Channels – No update this week. The RC’s will continue to run last week’s version #17.12.01.511131. Mazidox Linden found a bug in the planned updates and stopped the release. So, next week… probably not. That is the start of a no-change-window. Continue reading

I was curious what Linden Homes look like these days. They have changed. They are nice. Finding them to look at is a bit trick. The Linden Homes stuff on the website is here: Customize Your Home. I’m not sure this link will work for everyone. It is in your Dashboard->Account->Premium Membership->Explore Your Linden Home. They have pictures in the website. But, I wanted to SEE the homes. Second Life and the CLOUD

Inara Pey has apparently sat through a dry video of Tara Hernandez’s, Senior Director of Systems and Build Engineering at Linden Lab,Ā presentation at Amazon’s Las Vegas promotion for their services. She has written about it here: SANSAR AND SECOND LIFE IN THE CLOUD: LL SPEAKS AT AWSĀ RE:INVENT. The video is here:

That is a 34-minute video on YouTube. There are some gems in the video that interest Second Lifeā„¢ people.

I had not realized the first iteration of SL used a graphics engine designed to circumvent the Windows graphics and go directly to hardware. This go-to-hardware was the early game-graphics optimization used by most of the industry. That is long gone. Now OpenGL is the optimization that interfaces with all the various graphics systems in use with SL.

Inara covers the main parts SL’ers will find interesting. But, the video is loaded with tidbits about Second Life and how they are changing away from the problems with ideas for Sansar. So, some seldom talked about SL things are described in the video.

There is about 10+ minutes of tech description on Sansar and how it works. And toward the end some words on how they plan to adapt Second Life for life in the cloud.
