Misplaced jelly-dolls… you may have seen this bug. Some over-dressed avatar hits your ACI limit and ends up stuck on your screen like a HUD. Eeew… The Lindens think they have it figured out. Seems the info for an attachment to the overdressed av arrives before the location to attach it to. So, the viewer sticks it on a HUD attachment point.

The problem is more likely to happen in a crowd.

The workaround seems to be to un-jelly and then re-jelly the problem av. But some Lindens think this an unlikely work-around. Continue reading →

Second Life: Content Creation 2018-11/29

I’ve had problems with Adobe’s Premiere Pro 2019, as have a bunch of other people. As I use that software to edit these videos, I haven’t been posting. That and RL time availability.

The CCUG meetings have been mostly about Animesh. However, they have been covering the status of various projects in Second Life. In this video, we get information on Animesh, Bakes On Mesh, and EEP.

Oz Linden opens with the status of BoM. Using the Project Viewer, you can test BoM everywhere in SL. The feature is provided by a backend service, formerly known as Server-Side Baking (a 2012 thing). The service bakes the appearance of a classic avatar into three composite textures combining skin, tats, underwear, and clothes. This service has now been updated to handle classic and mesh avatars and we call it BoM to distinguish it from SSB.

The Lindens seem a bit nervous about how well the service is working. From their side of things all looks well. However, users have ways of breaking and overloading things in ways the Lindens did not anticipate. So, they are hoping users will use the BoM Project Viewer (alternate Viewers) to test the service. Pfaffenthal 1867 is a historically accurate Second Life build of a section of the city of Luxembourg in 1867±. Several in the blogosphere are writing about it being moved to Sansar. The reason for the move given in a letter to Pfaffenthal residents is land-cost, the free 4×4 km land in SL would require about 225 regions in Second Life… at US$300± per region… that is $67,000/mo… Free vs $67k…

But space in a virtual world is not just about cost and the amount of building space. SL has value because of people. People will be a bit tougher to find in and attract to a build in Sansar. Continue reading →

Second Life: Enhanced Environment Project

This is coming along nicely. Simon and Oz Linden have started using it in the AGNI grid. You have to have an EEP Viewer to see the change, but, soon the RC viewer will go main and EEP will be an official feature of SL.

At the Server-Scripting UG meeting I arrived using the Firestorm viewer. The sky looked very different.

Using region defaults I got this odd result. At first, I was trying to figure out what I was last doing that messed things up.

Then Simon explained what had changed. Switching over to the EEP Viewer I could see the new sky with a pumpkin moon.

The Enhanced Environment Project, EEP, has its semi-official announcement, Environmental Enhancement Project (aka EEP!) Feedback Thread. You find it in the SL Forum in Creation. I say ‘semi’ because the gold announcements of new features when released is made in the blog section Featured News.

The feature is still only working in the preview grid, ADITI, and requires use of a project viewer: Second Life Project EEP Viewer version 5.1.10.520121. (release notes) You’ll find the download links in Alternate Viewers. This is a bump up from the initial confidential links released only to those participating in the Content Creators’ UG.

Second Life: EEP Testing Begins

Enhanced Environment Project or EEP has begun testing (9/20/2018). The server-side code and inventory changes are only in place on Aditi, the preview grid. You also need the not-yet-project viewer. Which you can get here: OSX, Win-64, and Win-32.

These versions of the EEP viewer do NOT have the animesh code. However, the EEP enabled server code does have the animesh code. So, while you can see animesh animating in EEP regions you have to be using the Animesh RC viewer, which means you can’t see the EEP changes.

Confused? Think one or the other. Not both at the same time.

SL Third-Party Dev Meeting 2018 w32

Not many attending last Friday… Some news mostly updates.

The Bugsplat RC Viewer should be identical to default viewer. The only difference is it uploads crash reports to the Bugsplat system. The Lindens are wrapping up their evaluation. There is no information pre-evaluation on where this is going. Oz Linden through it was going well. But, until the numbers and Linden-users’ evals are in no can know.

There is a Voice RC Viewer out and another in QA that uses a newer Vivox SDK. In the newer one voice crashes recover automatically.

Oz tells us there are 3 other viewer candidates likely to appear this week (#33).

The Animesh RC will get an update. Another Rendering changes version is coming. A new Maintenance version is in the wings waiting for a simulator change – the offline communication thing. The point here is to be more reliable in delivering messages at login, which were sent to you while you are offline.

Also, there are 3 Project viewers; the Estate Management Tools’ new features for the ban list, for which they are looking for feedback. There is the Snapshot Viewer which has no change, but they hope to get back to soon. For now, they are likely working on the Facebook problem with snapshots not uploading. Second Life Land Auctions Change

Today the Lindens announced the Land Auction process is changing, A Face lift for Auctions.

Auctions are now a subset of Places Pages… or something along that line. See Second Life Auctions. Notice the URL of the page starts with places.secondlife.com/auctions.

You can see the land up for auction as open, scheduled, and recently closed. There are links to the land so you can see it. The link on the Auction page opens a Places Page. There is a SLURL on the Places Page.

The details of how to use the Auction are in a walkthrough, Land Auctions. And there is FAQ page, Auctions FAQ.

Soon we will be able to setup our own auctions. For now the Lindens are setting up the auctions using the new system. Once they feel it is working to their satisfaction, they’ll open it to residents.
