Second Life’s Festival of Sin II

We have lots of events in Second Life and Festival of Sin II (SLURL) is another. Ciaran Laval and the Hottie Cootrati Experience have covered the festival.

Festival of Sin II - August 2015

Festival of Sin II – August 2015

It has rules… whaaaat?

  1. Have fun!
  2. Don’t be shy, we encourage debauchery of all kinds. We’re equal opportunity sinners.
  3. EXPLORE! There’s lots of hidden surprises lurking about the sim. Click things, look around corners.  Have a seat. >:}
  4. Don’t be a dick.

That is all.
If you have any questions or need any assistance, please contact Shiloh Selene (Barbie.Glas).

If you are into Gacha’s, there are plenty of those. I’m not that big on them. Nor am I all that into shopping ‘events’. So, I don’t often cover them. But, this is a build worth visiting. Mostly mesh and very well done. See what SL can be. Plus there is lots of nice stuff to buy.

Second Life Week 32

WoW Losing Subscribers

For years I have heard how Second Life is losing subscribers. It is true, but the new users and returning users keep the number of people in SL about the same. SL has gone from 1 million plus to about 900,000 from 2007 to 2015.

Blizzcon – Official World of Warcraft Art // Illidan Stormrage

Let’s try to put some perspective on that. Take a look at World of Warcraft’s numbers. In Q4-2014 there were 10 million subscribers. By the end of Q1-2015 it was down to 7.1 and now at the end of Q2-2015 it is 5.6. That is almost half the users in 6 months. (Reference – nice graph) In December 2005, 15 months after starting WoW, they passed 5.6 million. In October 2010 they were at 12.0 million, the peak I think.  Continue reading

Who’s number is on the bathroom wall?

For some time a few of the Second Life™ related blogs have been on about Second Life’s reputation and whether it s a bad or good girl rep and if bad, what has to be done about it. But, Canary Beck posits Second Life has little if any reputation outside the user community.  Canary and I both recently looked at the search engines to see what they might show people searching for Second Life and I virtual worlds. The results are pretty much sexless. But, today Hamlet is still on about how bad the reputation is because of a post on Reddit… really!?!

Baby, when you finally get to love somebody, guess what, it's gonna be me..

Baby, when you finally get to love somebody, guess what, it’s gonna be me..

Admittedly Reddit gets a lot of use. But, what is a lot of use? How do we compare that to other services and social sites? First, there is a Redditmetrics.com that tells us something about which sub-reddits have the most subscribers.  There is a way to see how many of those subscribers are actually reading a Reddit page. (Traffic) One can also look to see how many are reading a given sub at the time you look. (Notice in the right column of a sub-reddit.)  Continue reading

Second Life: Too Little Sex?

Canary Beck has done a great research piece on whether or not Second Life’s reputation is that of a home for sexual perverts or not. Her research provides objective data on how Second Life™ is perceived by the Google Search Engine, which is about as objective a source as one can find.

The short answer is, no. The research and proof is rather convincing, but not totally definitive. It is the best I’ve seen to date. I think it is worth a read and it got me thinking. As you read you’ll be exposed to the concepts of confirmation bias and illusory correlation as a possible explanation for why some believe Second Life has a reputation problem. Continue reading

Second Life Sex Debate Devolves

Second Life has been banned from Twitch, surely you have heard. Motherboard, a tech reporting blog, has an article about that banning that features comments from Wagner James Au (Hamlet Au) of New World Notes. See: Second Life Is Banned From Twitch Because Cocks Can Happen at Any Moment.

The article is accurate enough based on what I know and can find. But, that has not stopped some from placing blame on Hamlet for what various reporters are doing to capture readers.

Over the years I have found Drax to be a very talented but emotional supporter of Second Life. He has done an amazing job of finding the high points of Second Life an reporting on them. His ability to portray the good side of Second Life and the people that use SL to positive effect surpasses all others. (Please notice the period)  Continue reading

Second Life: Adult Content Problems

I am writing more about sex in virtual worlds and Second Life™ than I’m getting… Ciaran Laval has an article about Twitch: Twitch Explicitly Prohibits Second Life With Rules Of Conduct Update. The TL:DR is simply they have banned all content from Second Life, by name. The official details are in the Twitch RoC Update. I think there has been another edit since Ciaran posted his article.

They say added for clarity:

If a game’s US version is rated Adults Only by the ESRB, you should not broadcast that game on Twitch. However, ESRB rated Mature versions of Adults Only titles are permitted for streaming, such as Mature versions of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy.

Games rated 18+ by other rating systems are fine to stream, so long as they are not rated AO by the ESRB, and they don’t violate the standard language of our RoC and ToS.

The peeps at Twitch are making it clear Adult Only… meaning sexual, content is NOT welcome. They list the games by name and SL is one. I suspect this is a move to save time and effort on their part, they are deciding what is too sexy by the game not the actual content. That saves them time looking at and deciding if the content crosses their line. Continue reading

Second Life in the NEWS

Massively Overpowered has an article by Bree Royce, I think she wrote it, titled SEX, LOVE, AND MMOS in the Working as Intended column. Second Life™ is mentioned but is not the focus. The image used for the article is from Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Bree is on about the hypocrisy of those diss’ing those that role play sexual encounters in games. Also, the ridiculous concepts of putting down those RP’ing sex while playing as mostly nude female warriors slaughtering their way to the next level.  Continue reading

Hooking Up in Second Life – Lessons

Canary Beck is writing lots of Second Life related interesting stuff lately. Or maybe it is just that I’m following her blog now and seeing it now. Whichever, she has an article about how men can pick up women or at least how to approach them and improve their odds of success: How To Approach A Woman In Second Life.

Here's an idea...

There are mistakes guys make in Second Life that are not made in real life. Canary touches on most of those. She also has quite a collection of bad pickup lines to avoid using. Those alone make it worth a read.  Continue reading
