Second Life: Third Party Viewers and Project Bento

I don’t cover the Third-Party Viewers as much as I used to. I think Project Bento is a change that will make any viewer without Bento capability obsolete. Some Third Party Viewers are already Bento capable. Here is what I have found.

…and I may have made mistakes about which viewer does and doesn’t have Bento capability. If you see one please correct me.  Continue reading

Second Life: Kokua Viewer 2016-21

The Kokua-4.0.2 viewer updated March 29. Since then there have been significant updates to the SL Viewers. The Kokua blog has posted about the new additions and the status of their 4.0.5 viewer and made a request for testers to help as they bring Kokua up to date. See: Kokua project status update and request of testers.

The, I guess, RC version of Kokua (4.0.5) has the HTTP update, all the items in the Maintenance update, and the fixes and new features in the Quick Graphics update. Plus they have made an RLV version and NO-RLV version of Kokua. Continue reading

Can You Help Kokua Viewer Dev’s?

This Kokua Viewer update adds version 2.9.15 of RLV and brings Kokua on par with Linden viewer version 3.8.6, which I think means it has the  Quick Graphics and Avatar Complexity features, but with out the build number… it may be the Notifications viewer updates. Whichever, The Dev’s need help testing this update.

Areas of the viewer they are asking be tested:

  • Inventory handling.
  • Outfit remove and replace.
  • Individual wearable items remove from avatar and wear from inventory.
  • Mesh model upload.
  • File uploads.

Third Party Viewers Week 44

This is a brief round up of the Third Party Viewers for Second Life that I find interesting. Not in any particular order. The popular feature to be adding is: Restore to Last Position. I explain that in the section on RLV.

RLV 2.9.15 Update

Marine has updated the RLViewer she maintains. She is adding in the feature from Firestorm and Kokua: Restore to Last Position. This is a controversial feature the Lindens have omitted from the Linden made viewer. It apparently generates too many support calls.

What's that sound?

The controversy centers around a problem the feature creates. Imagine you have a parcel in, say, Fishergate and it is in the northwest corner of the region. You build and rez stuff into that parcel. You then take them into inventory. You go to a different region, say Furball, and get a parcel in its south central area. When you use Restore to Last Position to rez those items they will poof away. You will most likely find them rezzed at the 0,0,0 point in the region. Continue reading

Kokua Viewer Releases v2.9.14

This is a version that is ready for TESTING… more than being for daily use. The big change is the RLV fix up.

They are advising you to use this only on the Preview Grid until you are comfortable with it. That makes me a bit nervous.

In testing they want you to be sure about whether a problem is a ‘viewer’ problem or an RLV problem. You do that by seeing if you can replicate the problem in another RLV viewer. Then file the bug report in the appropriate place.

See: Kokua with RLV 2.9.14 is ready to test.
