Second Life News 2013-47 #2

There is nothing new on the server front since Tuesday. See: Second Life News 2013-47 for details on the servers.

Next week (48) is a no change window. That means no rollouts. Also, there will not be a Server Beta User Group meeting that week.

Since the revised Grey Goo fence settings came on line the Lindens have not heard complaints in that regard. So, they are assuming their fix is working. This is about large building rezzers failing because the tighter settings for the fence was catching them. Unless the Lindens see complaints, this problem is considered fixed.

There was discussion of problems with scripts using collision detection and crossing regions. Air planes using Mono scripts with collision cannot cross regions. This may be related to BUG-4084.  Continue reading

This Tuesday we are getting a rollout to the main channel. This is the package that ran on Blue Steel and Le Tigre last week (46).  It is the Experience Tools package. We know very little about what is changed in this release. It is Experience Tools ‘infrastructure.’

RC Channels

Magnum will run the same package as last week, a maintenance release with bug fixes. My article from last Tuesday covers the details.

This release gets merged with the release going to the main channel. Plus the Lindens are tweaking the Grey Goo fence to remove some of the problems inflicted on large item rezzing tools. The new stricter control now will only apply to tools rezzing physical objects. Continue reading

Some big news from this week is the release of the ‘Interesting Viewer’, this is the viewer with improvements from the Interest List project (ILP).  The project is about doing a better job of deciding what to render first.

Torley did a good job of illustrating what the project does.

For months we have been getting the server side changes from the project. For weeks we have been promised the viewer side changes. Now those changes are out in a RC Viewer release: Second Life 3.6.11 (283895) Nov 13 2013.  Continue reading

Main Channel

This week there is no roll to the main channel. Monday was a US holiday, which would normally through of this week’s rollouts. Since there is no rollout to the main channel, we should see the typical Wednesday rollout for the RC channels.

RC Channels

Blue Steel and Le Tigre will have the Experience Tools preparatory package running.

Magnum will have a maintenance release with bug fixes. One fix is: “Sim crossing on vehicle fails when parcel at opposite sim border is full.” (BUG-4152). Another is a case where a viewer with a high draw distance would not connect to distant regions which are within the draw distance area. Continue reading

Second Life News 2013-45

I’m distracted with real life projects. But, the main channel is getting a rollout from the RC channels today (Tuesday). It is a maintenance package with some bug/server crash fixes. There is not much in the way of details.

RC Channels

All three RC channels will get the same package Wednesday. This package is preparatory changes to the Second Life™ infrastructure to allow eventual rollout of the Advanced Experience Tools.

So, what is changing? No one is saying. We can assume most of the change is going to have to do with the permissions system. If that suspicion is correct, we can assume that this will be a very slow well tested rollout.

Consider. Linden Realms was news in March 2012. The first rollout of Advanced Experience Tools (AET) resulted in Griefer Monday (June 2012). The exploit was about a hole in permissions, which is why I thin the permissions system is being changed. After that fiasco the Lindens said the project was being re-thought and it disappeared from view. Now we only hear bits and pieces about it, like preparatory infrastructure changes’.

The AET project is approaching its second birthday.

Also, one has to wonder how the Lab is going to handle permissions to denote what items in SL and the Market Place can be sold on Desura…

Second Life News 2013-44 #2

Simon Linden  has put together a server maintenance release. This package is mostly bug fixes. There is a fix for BUG-4142 which has to do with a ‘parcel full’ error associated with vehicle region crossings. We are also told that some teams have some other ‘shinnies’ included in the package. But, for now those are secret.

There are some hits that something is going on with “Fitted Mesh”… that is what the Mesh Deformer does. So, is there something going on? Probably. But, we have no clues. In any case this is what we would call preparatory work. Nothing to see folks.

At this time they doubt the package will make it through QA in time for next week’s RC roll out. They expect it to make for the week after.

This means there is nothing to roll to the RC channel next week (45).

The current RC maintenance package will likely roll to the main grid next week. So, we will likely have a week with the same server software running on all channels of the grid in week 45.  Continue reading

There is stuff going on. But, there is not much in the way of news, at least that I find interesting. Also, I am distracted by RL work.

CtrlAltStudio Adds Interface for Oculus

CtrlAltStudio Adds Interface for Oculus

CtrlAltStudio has released a new Oculus viewer version that adds in some basic user interface controls. See: Alpha 4: Some Preliminary Rift UI in the CtrlAltStudio Viewer.

It looks like CtrlAltStudio is doing some good work. I will be interested to see what Linden Lab™ comes up with for a User Interface (UI) for Oculus Rift.

SL Server Update

The main channel is not being updated. Calab Linden provided the Deploys update this week. He did not make cler if there would be a wave of restarts are not. By the time you read this you’ll know if your region restarted or not. As yet (9:45AM PDT) I haven’t received a restart notice from my in-world home. Continue reading

Second Life News 2013-43

There was a roll to the main channel today. This is the package that ran on all the RC channels. This is mostly a bug-fix package.

The Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed “Group member access to parcels fails when ‘Sell passes to’ is enabled” (BUG-3992[c])
  • Fixed “‘Ghost’ avatars and vehicles sometimes appear to an observer at the sim border” (BUG-3872[c])
  • Extremely high Avatar Render Weights reported to the server are now capped at 500,000 (BUG-4010[c])
  • Fixed “Vehicles which exit a region with a passenger are incorrectly auto-returned and become ‘ghost shapes’ in the physics engine” (BUG-4024[c])
  • Fixed a performance issue with avatar loading speed in the experimental ‘viewer-interesting’ viewer

RC Channels

No new packages will roll to the RC’s. It is not clear if they are going to be restarted or not. The package they were testing is the package rolling to the main channel. The result is both the main and RC channels will run the same version this week. So, a restart is not needed in the RC channels as the package is already running.
