Second Life Reddit

I have spent some time on Reddit. I used to regularly post on Reddit, but not so much any more. I see people talking about how handy Reddit is. Some say it leads visitors to their blog. Daniel Voyager in his article titled: Second Life on reddit says, “…it’s a very good way to get the latest Second Life news…”

So, I was wondering just how popular Reddit is. I needed to find some stats. It took a bit of looking but I did come up with them.

A quick look at them shows who most of the posters are. The far left site is Inara’s modemworld.wordpress.com. The web page chopped off the name.

Second Life Materials System 2013-4

Maestro says server side support for Materials is very close to going to RC status. It might make it into an RC channel next week. But, don’t get too excited. The viewer side has to complete and make it through QA before we can test it.

The server side is already running in ADITI for testing.

As there is no public version of the Materials Project Viewer, there is currently no way to test the new feature. Geenz Spad the primary programmer for the update said at Wednesday’s Open Source meeting, “I don’t have any particularly specific updates outside of we’re inching closer to something people can use. To be perfectly honest, I’ve largely been focusing my efforts on the rendering side of things and a few Mac related odds and ends.

CCIIUG Informally Closed

Content Creation Improvement Informal User Group (CCIIUG) is informally disbanded… or temporarily just not meeting. Geenz Spad was facilitating the meetings. When asked directly on Wednesday at the Open Source UG Geenz said, “Informally, for the time being. Sadly, not much was actually getting done there and sadly I don’t have as much time as I used to for the group.”

I’ve written about the group several times. Click CCIIUG in tags (to the right) to get a list of the articles.

This is a group that had excellent potential. Geenz is the primary doer in the Materials project. I am not clear on whether Geenz is bound by an NDA or his personal desire to get things finessed before going public. I think it is a combination. Without his being able or willing to talk about progress on the Materials System there is very little fresh meat for this group. Thus interest in it has died.

Second Life News 2013-4 (3)

From previous news you know we did not get a new package rolled to the main channel. Thursdays  Server Beta meeting gives a bit more information on what to expect for next week. For now Maestro Linden thought the Interest List package running on Magnum was the best bet for getting promoted next week (5).

Magnum is not completely trouble free. Some people are reporting problems with Bots…. aaaw. Sorry. Those running bots are people too and are probably paying the Lab ore than most Second Life™ users.

It seems LibOpenMetaverse bots go into some type of high bandwidth use, pulling 100kb/sec. Restarts of the bot and region don’t seem to help.

You can see the difference in the graph. The day of the rollout 1/23, you can see the jump in data transfer. Below you can see the rate increasing during the first four minutes of a bot relog.

Flufee Destinations: The Arrival

A new Flufee video is out today. Draxtor describes it:

I [Drax] visited “The Arrival” by Rose Borchovski a few days ago & I have to say: immersive art (or whatever we should call a digital-installation-interactive-performance-3D-persistent-sculpture-space-what-not) is not ON EVERY DARN art curator’s top agenda is a shame… shame… shame…..
