TLS is sort of part of SSL and sort of a replacement. It is enough to know that it is the part of the viewer that secures all the viewer’s money handling communications. I forget the cutoff date, but there is a date coming soon when a viewer MUST have TLS 1.2 or the SL servers will refuse to talk to the the viewer for money things. You can use your viewer and run around SL. But, you won’t be able to buy things. Continue reading

Second Life TPD News Week 8

There isn’t much change in the Viewer pipeline. Work is proceeding but some of the problems have taken time to resolve. The RC viewers are revealing problems, which is the whole point of having RC versions. Continue reading

Marketplace Beta Search: Better?

I am one that has bitched about ‘search’ in Second Life™ for years. The results have always been a confusing mix of items related and unrelated to the search target/term. Now the Lab is making the new search, Marketplace Beta Search, easier to find and use.

Marketplace Beta Search Link

Marketplace Beta Search Link

In November 2015 Linden Lab posted an article about the Beta Marketplace Search. See: Introducing Marketplace Search Beta. They updated it later the same month. Now they seemed to have moved to broader testing and have placed a link to the new search on the landing/home page of the current Marketplace or I’m just noticing it.  Continue reading

What of Second Life will Sansar be?

Loki Eliot has a thoughtful article up about the NATURE of Second Life™. Ebbe Altberg, Linden Lab CEO, has said on a couple of occasions that Project Sansar will produce a world in the SPIRIT of Second Life. To have any idea what he means we have to understand how Ebbe sees Second Life. I can’t provide a clear picture of Ebbe’s thinking. What we are discussing is far too complex and I’ll get into that complexity.

Loki goes with how he sees Second Life. See: What is the Spirit of Second Life?.

We have several opinions and quotes from Philip Rosedale, the attributed creator of SL, about what they planned for Second Life to be. There are more on what Philip says it became. There are also all the marketing campaigns that have spun what Second Life is in attempts to interest people in SL. Then we have all the opinions on what Second Life is from those that have used or participated in Second Life.  Continue reading

Second Life Update Week 8

Servers

Last week (7) saw an unusual rollout for an update with a security fix in the under lying Linux code.

Peace..

Peace..

This week (8) there is no roll to the main channel. There will be a roll to the RC channels with all three getting the same package; RC BlueSteel, LeTigre, and Magnum. There is a Server crash fix and some minor improvements…

So, not much news on the server front.  Continue reading

Second Life Bits Week 8

Ciaran Laval writes RL is taking time away from his blogging. He’ll be a bit sporadic about posting. See: Brief Update. Darn. Ciaran is good.

Inara Pey is responding to those saying they will never visit a Project Sansar world if there is no World Map… or I suppose in the case of Sansar it would be more of a Universe Map. See: Maps as metaphors: Second Life and Sansar.

Anyone saying what they are NOT going to do something because of what something is going to be before they know what it is going to be… is obviously a shallow thinker… if they think.

Inara in her updates mentions the Gray Box problem, which has to do with regions crossings while attached to a vehicle. I can’t remember when I last crossed a region boundary with a vehicle. If you are running into that problem more information is here: SL project updates 16 7/1: server and viewer.

Your SL Firsts

SLUniverse has a kind of fun thread running. It is about your First ____________ in Second Life™. Check it out here: Your SL Firsts.

Alchemy Viewer Beta 4

Maria over at Hypergrid Business has a write up on the latest Alchemy Viewer Beta 4.0.0. See: Alchemy viewer updates browser, chat bar.

The title tells you the big change in this version. Cinder Roxley, Alchemy developer, says they have surpassed the Lab in the implementation of the CEF browsers engine. Cinder is using the latest and greatest, I guess.

Word is this version catches Alchemy up to Linden Viewer 4.0.0.
