How to find Cheap, Good Stuff in the SL Marketplace…

Ryan Schultz has published a little tutorial on his site, Second Life Steals, Deals, and Freebies: How to Find Free and Inexpensive Items on the SL Marketplace. I think it is a handy tutorial on how the SL Marketplace search features works… I use the word ‘works’ loosely. Using the left-column of filters makes finding stuff … Read more

Servers

There are no updates to the main or RC channels this week. No restarts are planned either.

The updates are still in testing over in ADITI. Mazidox Linden expects to have more information by Thursday’s Server Beta UG meeting.

Viewers

A new main viewer came out late last week. The Maintenance version 5.1.4.515016 is now the default viewer.

Looking back, I didn’t write up much about this version. There are a load of changes and improvements in this version. Check the release notes for ALL the details.

The interesting changes are…

In the Appearance editor we are supposed to have a Wear Only This Outfit. I can’t find any such choice.

Temporary attachments can now be removed. I think the change is these temps now show in the WEARING tab so they can be selected and detached.

Some login problems have been fixed and error messages improved.

Blue Steel, Le Tigre, and Magnum are all to be determined. If nothing rolls out, all main grid regions will be running the same version. Or we might see something roll to the RC channels.

Windows 10 Spring Update – Part II

Here is the scoop on the Windows update… Does it work with Second Life™? Short answer, yes.

This morning I had an update notice… maybe ‘warning’ is more accurate. I choose to go ahead with it. They warn it may take longer than most updates. It took between 60 and 90 minutes. (i5-6600k @ 4.1GHz) So, you may want to choose a time to update, they give you the option to schedule the update, which is smart.

I’ve noticed a few complaints in the Second Life forum. Seems some are having issues with NVIDIA drivers. My NVIDIA 388.13 (23.21.13.8813) made the transition. But a couple of my hardware monitoring tools didn’t make it.

Win 10 removes those apps it thinks are incompatible. Seems the nanny-state propaganda is soaking in everywhere. So, Microsoft in its awesome wisdom is taking care of us. The language I would use to thank them is generally considered inappropriate.

Apparently, Firestorm and Linden viewers are considered appropriate. Firestorm launches and runs. Everything seems to run. On my front porch I get about 58 FPS. In January with 5.0.11 I was getting about 90. In my green screen room at 1500m I was getting 140 FPS and now 180. Jumping over to the near buy newbie hub, I was getting 40-50 FPS with 20± people around. With 28 around (according to world map) I get 57±. For easier comparison;

Third-Party Dev Meeting 2018 w19

Not much news coming out of the Third-Party Developer meeting this week.

Both the Love Me Render Viewer and the Maintenance Viewer are progressing. The Maintenance version is doing a bit better in testing. Either could be the next release, with Maintenance having a small edge.

In the pipeline are the estate management tools improvement, caching stuff to improve cache performance, a set of voice improvements, and various random changes.

Vacation season is starting in the USA. So, there will be schedule and project disruptions as people go on vacation.

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is not viewer related. The Lab mostly already does all GDPR requires. Internal discussions in the Lab have been about how neat it is they Lab has never collected the problem-personal-info GDPR deals with. So, they have very little to do to be GDPR compliant.
