Ebbe on VR

Bloomberg Business talked about Virtual Reality (VR) a few days ago. In the show was a few minutes with Ebbe Altberg, Linden Lab CEO. The discussion of VR starts about 10:30m in.

My take away is that gaming adoption of VR is going to be slow. Mostly because of cost. Other uses of VR are likely to lead the adoption race. Medical and military use seem to be the leading fields for VR adoption.

In other news, the Oculus Rift is already behind the tech curve. Seems Sony is adding features to their Playstation implementation of the headset that Oculus don’t yet support. Wouldn’t that be an upset?

Also, Unreal has added in world modeling. You can build your game/world inside the world. Very Second-Life-ish. So, does that put them ahead of Linden Lab? I doubt it. I still give the edge to the Lab based on their experience with virtual worlds and economies.

Google Computers

Ever wonder what Google’s ‘cloud’ farm looks like? Here is a 360° video tour of one installation. Click and drag in the video to rotate the view. I know this works with Google Chrome browser. I am not sure about others.

Some of what they are talking about is outside the frame. You will have to click-drag the view to see what they are talking about.

Second Life: Windlight Tutorial

Daeberethwen Arbenlow has a 20 minute video (3/27/2016) on controlling your Windlight settings for photography in Second Life. She uses the Firestorm Viewer and the Photo Tools feature it has. Those using the basic Linden viewer can accomplish the same changes to Windlight, just not as easily nor will the video help you learn how to use the Linden viewer, just the Firestorm viewer.

Daeberethwen does a good job of explaining all the settings and what they do. Along with the verbal description is the video example allowing you to see the changes.

Firestorm has the best set of features for photographers and machinigraphers (or is that machinamists?).

Second Life: Physics Tutorial

Things go in cycles. Have you noticed? Second Life™ tutorials certainly seem to come in waves. For instance Strawberry Singh has redone her Avatar Physics tutorial as a video. See: Second Life Avatar Physics Tutorial or jump directly to the video tutorial at YouTube. I suggest you read Strawberry’s article.

Strawberry’s is a nine minute video that covers the information you can find detailed in the Firestorm Viewer’s wiki: Firestorm Avatar Physics, with a bit more detail. Everything you really need to know is in the video. I think she did a pretty good job on the video.

She points out that your mesh body and mesh clothes have to be rigged for Avatar Physics, otherwise your boobies and other parts won’t bounce. The only way you can know if an item is correctly rigged is to try the demo. Merchants just don’t put this stuff in the promo material, at least not in-world. They are a bit better in the marketplace.

According to what Strawberry is told only the Belleza body has butt bounce. From firsthand experience she says Slink and Maitreya bodies do not, just breast and belly bounce.
