Second Life Servers – Week #50

There hasn’t been much server news. Last week no updates rolled out as QA had found problems. Nor was there a roll-out to the main grids primary channel this week as the RC channel packages were having problems.

This week we did get a roll-out to the RC channels. All three channels are getting the same package. That roll-out came Wednesday.

The package is a maintenance release. The release notes tell us the package consists of crash-fixes and a fix for BUG-10192 Feature Request: llGetObjectDetails() constant OBJECT_OMEGA.

It is hard to tell if little is actually going on or there is secret stuff going on.

Viewer Update Week 50

Second Life 3.8.6-305981 – Main Viewer – Or formerly the Notifications Viewer

My viewer: Second Life 3.8.7 (306758) Oct 27 _ When I mention viewer problems or issues while writing about other topics over the past couple of weeks, this is the viewer I am most likely using.

Second Life Places: Virtual Decay

I’m not  into being a tour guide. Other blogs do it better. But, I saw Hamlet’s post pointing us to some of Loverdag’s interesting photography on Flickr. Hamlet included this image in his post. I’m impressed enough to also  include the image in mine and went looking for more information.

Virtual Decay
Virtual Decay

I see images on Flickr that are associated with Second Life avatars. But, I can’t always tell if all their images are from SL. Some SL peeps play in other worlds too. This set of images falls into that ‘unsure’ category. But, these are images from a place in Second Life™.

Project Sansar: Smarten Up or Dumb Down?

The eighth of Canary’s anxieties is about dumbing down Sansar. I think it goes hand-in-hand with the ninth anxiety: too complex. Opposite sides of the same coin, sort of. It is true the Lab is trying to make Sansar appeal to the masses and that an easy to use factor. But, is Project Sansar really going to give us a dumber virtual world?

'Control desk'
‘Control desk’

The term ‘dumb down’ will have different meanings as it is somewhat ambiguous. Another term in the gaming world that could apply would be NERF. Will they nerf SL into Sansar?
