Facebook and Cyber Attacks

If it has not occurred to you, Facebook is an incredible resource for hackers stealing ID’s. People put in all sorts of personal information that can be used by hackers. I would never put my real birth date or any other information asked for by financial institutions on Facebook.

After The End

After The End

It is bad enough that individuals and private teams attack people. But, now governments and terrorist organizations are attacking private individuals. It is not just the Pentagon in DC or the CIA at Langley that are targets. You too may be a target, especially if you work for the Defense Department. Continue reading

Second Life: Alert!

Friday,18 Sep 2015 02:07:13 GMT

[Unscheduled Rolling Maintenance September 2015]

We will be performing unscheduled rolling maintenance for all regions on our Second Life sever channels; Magnum, BlueSteel and LeTigre RC server channels beginning at approximately midnight PDT. The wording and punctuation made the message unclear. I changed “…sever channel, Magnum,…” to read as “…sever channels; Magnum,…” Whoever types these messages may have English as their second language.

Second Life & RL: Avatar Safety

Every so often I find people doing things in service to others which I think people should know about. Lindal Kidd teaches a 90 minute class on Avatar Safety. That class is becoming of interest in RL and in several places in Second Life™.  Learn more here: Avatar Safety Goes Off-Campus.

Second Life & Virtual Reality

We are getting closer to hands on. The Oculus Rift is to release in the first quarter of 2016. At this point I think the first round of pre-release technical challenges has been met. So, any possible delay would be from manufacturing and supply problems.

Now that the Samsung Galaxy S6 is in production the supply of display screens for the Oculus should be adequate.

Unity and Unreal, game engine platforms, are both announcing support of HTC RE Vive. This means game developers can move away from having to develop support for the various VR headsets and use the support provided by Unity and Unreal. This saves developer’s time and means new games will move through the development pipeline faster.  Continue reading

Second Life: Rez Failures & CDN Issues

Samual Wetherby posted about rez problems and CDN failures in the SL Forum: Rez Failures & CDN Issues during Peak SL times? 5:30pm SLT – 9pm ish? Nightly? In the last 24 hours few have read the post, about 50.

Hold On! This Is Gonna Be A Bumpy Ride!

Hold On! This Is Gonna Be A Bumpy Ride! by Bambi Chicque of BamPu Legacies, on Flickr

CDN = Content Delivery Network, the idea here is to have a set of servers near you cache Second Life. You then fill your cache from the CDN cache. This means numerous servers all over the world are delivering content to users near them. Theoretically, this provides better service and faster rendering. Plus it takes a load off the Linden servers. Continue reading

Second Life: Group Chat Failures

No one is sure what is going on in any detail. But, we have seen the group chat for the Mad Pea Blood Letters’ hints (Madpeas) go down a couple of times and the Firestorm Support group. Both groups have been able to send notices to their group’s users advising them of the problem.

The restarts for hardware updates may have been contributing to the problem. No changes are being rolled to the chat servers this week because of the hardware update restarts. Whatever changes are being made to day ARE affecting group chat.

The Madpeas group chat was down late yesterday (11/18). It is still down now (11/19) 3± PM SLT.The Firestorm group is back up now.

Grid Status has made note of the issue:

[Posted 12:10 PM PDT, 18 November 2014] We will be performing additional scheduled maintenance on 19 November at approximately 1:00 AM PST. During this time, some residents may experience login issues and residents in-world may be logged off or experience degraded performance. Additionally, during this time Group Chat may fail. Please refrain from rezzing no-copy objects and making L$ transactions during this maintenance. Please check back here for updates. (Reference)

Second Life: Week of Restarts

Maddy Gynoid pointed me to a notice the Lab has posted in Grid Status saying starting the Week of Nov 17th (Monday) they will be doing grid maintenance with one or more restarts per region per day.

Grid Status – Scheduled Maintenance

[Posted 10:00 AM PST, 14 November 2014] Beginning Monday, November 17, we will be undertaking a full week of scheduled maintenance. This maintenance will take place at approximately 7:00 AM each day next week. Each region will be subject to one or more restarts, as its host takes its turn for inspection. A five-minute warning will be broadcast for each restarting region. Additional warnings will be broadcast to regions where multiple restarts are necessary. Please be cautious about going AFK for extended periods in the middle of build sessions or handling no-copy objects, as you may miss the shutdown warnings. Please keep an eye on this blog for further updates.
