Servers
Last week (7) saw an unusual rollout for an update with a security fix in the under lying Linux code.
This week (8) there is no roll to the main channel. There will be a roll to the RC channels with all three getting the same package; RC BlueSteel, LeTigre, and Magnum. There is a Server crash fix and some minor improvements…
So, not much news on the server front.
Viewers
Not much changing in the viewer area. While the Lindens are busy working, they haven’t reached the point they are willing to roll out a new version as the default viewer.
- Second Life Main Viewer version 4.0.1.310054
- RC Second Life HTTP update Viewer version 4.0.2.311302
- RC Second Life Maintenance Viewer version 4.0.2.311378
- RC Second Life Quick Graphics Viewer version 4.0.2.311103
- Second Life Project Bento Viewer version 5.0.0.310099
- Second Life Project Oculus Rift Viewer version 3.7.18.295296
We know that Quick Graphics is almost ready. They are tweaking the calculation to better represent some alpha layers. That seems to be more complex than I would imagine.
Rumor
There is a rumor something is being done with Outfits…
I have no clue if we will get sub-folders in Outfit, but I would love them. As it is now I name outfits to keep things organized.
There is also the problem of items that are linked into many outfits that have different settings per outfit. Think Iffyta, the one top, skirt, whatever and a load of HUD’s to change the textures. If you use texture 1 and outfit A then later make outfit B using texture 2, you’ll find outfit A has changed to use Texture 2 also.
The work around is to save copies of the item with each texture and use those copies in the outfits. That is what I do and I have a load of copies of things. I currently have 8 copies of my eXxEsS Sadira hair, 7 different colors and the original.
So, have the Lindens noticed a massive increase in copies of things? I have no clue. But, I doubt they can do anything to track the various settings for the various items in SL. But, I think they would think this inadvertent change of linked items a problem.
I hope they think the lack of sub-folders is a problem and are working on that.

A viewer 2 thingy…
In v1 viewers, an “outfit” can be any folder anywhere in your inventory. You just right click on the folder and “Replace outfit” from the context menu to wear it, or you drag the folder from your inventory onto your avatar…
For the past 9+ years, I have been storing all my “outfits” sub-folders inside an “Avatar” (because many outfits are in fact completely different avatars) folder, that I created at the root of my inventory. Voilà !… and no need for special outfit sub-folders and more bloat added to the viewer code… 😛
That would be great for me, if I could tolerate a V1 UI… just go ahead and rub it in… 🙂
Cool VL Viewer is just cool.
