Blender 2.79 Released – What’s Do for Second Life?

We have a new release of Blender as of 9/12. I always want to know what is the new release going to do for me in my work flow for Second Life. So, the TL:DR take is it messes up some things I do. But, not too bad. It looks like 2.8 will trip me worse. Still, for production, you’ll probably want to stay with 2.78c for a bit longer.

Blender 2.79 Splash – Sept 2017

For those working with Sansar, this is going to be an improvement. It will probably mess up your work flow a bit too. But, you’ll be getting advantages you can use in Sansar, like PBR. I’ll have to figure out if there is any ‘serious’ advantage for me in SL.

The release announcement is here: Blender 2.79.

I haven’t learned enough, yet, to comment on 2.79 accurately. So, these are the videos I think give us the information we need. This one is pre-release of 2.79. The short one first. This is about the video Blender can output when rendering. Mikey obviously hasn’t kept up on what is being done with Blender 2.8.

This next one is the better presentation of new features. It is a quick overview and at 18 minutes it should give you an idea of how much new stuff is in 2.79.

Oops – Land Impact Increase

Seems the system had a problem last week. There is a discussion about it on SLUniverse. After a restart, people were getting stuff returned like crazy. It is hard to know how wide spread the problem may have been. Few people are writing anything Google can find.

People are reporting stores jumping from 40 Land Impact (LI) to 400 LI. No small problem.

Second Life Third Party Dev Meeting 2017 w36

Some interesting stuff this week.

There is little change in the viewer pipeline. There is a new maintenance version, a new Alex Ivy version, and a new Voice version. All these versions are basically a folding in of recent main viewer update.

Alex Ivy, the 64-bit viewer, has 1 or 2 more bugs to be fixed before it is a candidate for promotion to the main viewer.

The Voice version has an elevated crash rate, but it is better with this last fold in.

All viewers have been tending to crash more over last few months than previously.

Third-Party Dev’s are not getting Linden reports on their viewer performance. Oz will be getting reports out Monday… events permitting.

Sansar Breaking 2017-09-08

Today Sansar will get the update we’ve been looking for. This has the ‘keyframe’ animations. Or for SL peeps animesh. Plus, the terrain editor and other stuff.

Sansar will be down for 90 minutes or so while the update is rolled out.

There is a problem if you are a Win 7 user. See “Your version of Windows appears to be out of date” – warning after install.

There is a little more information in the 9:30 Product meeting in the last 10 minutes of the video I am uploading. But, nothing to help with the problem.

Word is that lots of user stuff breaks in this update. I think that is user scripted things…

Sansar is not at the point where there is any backward compatibility. There is no Backward. So, users deal with stuff breaking. Which means we can’t sell stuff as the customer complaints and updates would be overwhelming.

By the time the 4 PM Meeting happens the update should be out. There should be a couple of Product Team members at the afternoon meeting. Only Cara made it to the morning meeting and she couldn’t get her mic working.

If you don’t know, you can do a Sansar viewer reset by clicking into My Look. So, when in an Experience click into My Look. When you come out, you pop back into the same instance of the Experience. It avoids the instance full problem that often blocks returning to a meeting.
