NVIDIA 1180 Almost Here…

We had rumors for months as to what the next NVIDIA card would be, when it would release, and what it would cost. But, we are getting closer to a possible release. NVIDIA only goes so long before they release a new card. So…

Ray Tracing is a way of rendering a scene. Its big advantage is in rendering very realistic images. For instance, most of an Ikea catalog is made from rendered images that for a long time I thought were RL photos.

The reason it isn’t used so much in games is the cost of rendering the images. So, software like AutoDesk’s AutoCAD use it as real time rendering isn’t needed. The primary task is prototype product images, pictures of products not yet existing in RL. Only within the design process… a computer.  Making it more of a snapshot thing than a  movie camera.

NVIDIA adding in a Ray Trace feature will being higher quality graphics to more games. Less time will be spent calculating the effect of lights and shadows.

For use in Second Life it isn’t going to be a big plus or even a change. The SL render engine is required to support older systems. So, adding a ray trace feature to the engine is not going to be a high priority, if it is even a consideration.

However, the card will be faster and likely have faster video memory.

Oz and Grumpity Linden Talk

Just now, 6/21 @ 3:15 PM SLT they are were talking live… Actually live from 2:00 to 3:30 PM SLT/PST.

00:00 – Grumpity Linden relating her coming to Second Life. Interesting.

03:25 – Oz Linden explaining how he came to SL. Also interesting.

08:40 – Oz what do you like best about your job? Good answer here…

12:00 – Oz, are you inspired by what people do with your engineering? Grumpity waxes poetic…

18:00 – Have gotten to see much of SL15B?

Servers

The main channel gets the package #18.06.06.516064 running on the RC channels last week, which has;

  • Additional work to support localized Abuse Report categories
  • Shaved a few nanoseconds off a check for each object update, as part of ongoing performance improvements
  • Stopped logging a trivial message
  • Internal fixes

Wednesday the RC channel Blue Steel gets version #18.06.14.516474. This is the Animesh version previously running in ADITI.

  • Animesh Support!
  • Find the latest Animesh Viewer here.

The server-side code has been running for sometime and according to Lindens is stable. However, the viewer is a project viewer. A couple of issues remain. When those get fixed we’ll likely see the viewer move to RC status.

Once the viewer goes to RC then third-party viewers can release their version of the Animesh Viewer. This may be the feature holding back a release of the next Firestorm Viewer. But, I’m guessing.

You’ll likely find some third-party viewers already have Animesh support. Technically those are ‘experimental’ versions. Main versions are supposed to wait for the Linden RC release. But, what fun is that?

Photoshop: Masking Impossible Hair?

Even in SL I run into this problem. The tutorials I usually see are elementary typically masking only high contrast images. This one is an exception. The basics and easy stuff is shown. But, the painful, tedious stuff is too.

Along the way there are some neat shortcuts he uses. I had to back up a couple of time for ‘How did he do that?’ things.

Second Life: Animesh RC Nearing – CC UG Meeting 2018 w24

Last week there was no Content Creators’ UG Meeting. This week there was. The meeting is held in the region Animesh4, ADITI. We have some hot news on Animesh. See 03:00 TM.

The word is we might, possibly, could, maybe see Animesh roll to the RC channels of Agni next week (#25). The word from the Beta Server UG is it is on the schedule for next week… Be excited, but don’t hold your breath.

The video…

I have time compressed parts of the video where there is no voice. So, you may have to pause the video to keep up the local chat.

03:00 – Vir announcing Animesh possibly to AGNI next week, week #25. At 08:15 Vir says release is dependent on getting an updated project viewer out before the server roll.

There are some bugs/problems that will still be running around next week. (03:45) The Encroachment Problem is being worked on. We will see the Linden solution in the next update of the Animesh viewer.
