Second Life Server News Week 45

Caleb Linden forgot to update the Deploys thread in the forum. :/ They apparently have him buried in work. Whatever, the main channel did get an update today (11/3). I’m just not sure which of the two RC’s made it. One was some server fixes the other the same fixes and an additional bug fix. Hopefully the later made it out.

The new RC package has a new support tool, that mean a tool for the Linden Support Staff.  It helps them re-align region edges. They sometimes get out of sync when the land owner moves the terrain up or down a significant amount.

I’m guessing there are some other bug fixes too…

Can You Help Kokua Viewer Dev’s?

This Kokua Viewer update adds version 2.9.15 of RLV and brings Kokua on par with Linden viewer version 3.8.6, which I think means it has the  Quick Graphics and Avatar Complexity features, but with out the build number… it may be the Notifications viewer updates. Whichever, The Dev’s need help testing this update.

See: Kokua with RLV 2.9.15 and code update to SecondLife 3.8.6 — Request for test.

Areas of the viewer they are asking be tested:

  • Inventory handling.
  • Outfit remove and replace.
  • Individual wearable items remove from avatar and wear from inventory.
  • Mesh model upload.
  • File uploads.

Firestorm + MadPea

Inara has an article up about the new testing of Community Gateways. We have seen the idea of community gateways appear a number of times over the years. We are now on the eve another iteration. In this one Linden Lab, Firestorm Developers, and MadPea Game Designers have teamed up to create a new gateway.

See: Firestorm ready to launch Gateway; MadPea join as partners.

The new gateway will be open Saturday 10/31 with events at; 13:00 SLT – Mankind Tracer, 14:00 SLT – Nance Brody, 15:00 SLT – The Changhigh Trinity Sisters Fire Show, and 14:00 SLT onwards – DJ Quad.

Check Inara’s article for more information.

Wayward Peaks Halloween

There are a lot of interesting places in Second Life™. Dolls and Demons, love the pictures, has an article up about a Gotcha Event: Hanging With The Bad Boys. Checking out the regions mentioned I came across Wayward Peaks. It is an awesome Gotcha event. There are Gotcha vendors are all over the region. So, you’ll be exploring.

The region is full of mesh. Much of it has poor LoD modeling. If you have set your RenderVolumeLODFactor set to 4, a bad move, you won’t notice. Using 1.125 I noticed. At 1.125 you have to be close to things for them to look right. But, in general the place is interesting.

Third Party Viewers Week 44

This is a brief round up of the Third Party Viewers for Second Life that I find interesting. Not in any particular order. The popular feature to be adding is: Restore to Last Position. I explain that in the section on RLV.

RLV 2.9.15 Update

Marine has updated the RLViewer she maintains. She is adding in the feature from Firestorm and Kokua: Restore to Last Position. This is a controversial feature the Lindens have omitted from the Linden made viewer. It apparently generates too many support calls.

What's that sound?

[Good facial expression]
The controversy centers around a problem the feature creates. Imagine you have a parcel in, say, Fishergate and it is in the northwest corner of the region. You build and rez stuff into that parcel. You then take them into inventory. You go to a different region, say Furball, and get a parcel in its south central area. When you use Restore to Last Position to rez those items they will poof away. You will most likely find them rezzed at the 0,0,0 point in the region.

Alchemy Viewer 3.8.5

This week an Alchemy Viewer 3.8.5 update was released. The developers are busy will real life money making. So, updates are coming slowly. It has been almost 3 months since the last update. This update brings Alchemy to a level with the Linden 3.8.5 version.  The current Linden version is 3.8.6.

Alchemy 3.8.5 - Oct 2015
Alchemy 3.8.5 – Oct 2015

This means Alchemy has the 90+ fixes the Lab added with the promotion of the Maintenance RC Viewer. Plus Alchemy fixes. But, it will still lack the new Notifications Handling released in Linden version 3.8.6.
