Second Life: No Change Weeks

As the holidays arrive we enter a time when the Lab closes down to a skeleton staff and employees take time off. It is a time when things are done to minimize the possibility of system problems and crashes. So, if it is working… don’t change it. Next week (47) is one of those weeks.

Countryside 2

I haven’t heard an official set of dates for this year’s no change weeks. I expect this one starts today and certainly tomorrow 11/19 and runs to 11/28.

The next set is Christmas-New Years. I expect it to start about December 17-21 and run to January 2. As Christmas falls on Sunday what the Lindens will decide to do is a bit unpredictable as the group seems to have significant input to management.

Whatever they decide, I wish them a full Thanksgiving (yum), a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.

The main channel of servers updated today, starting at 3AM SL Time, according to the grid status notices. That is the time of day with the fewest users. My tracker shows the minimum number of concurrent users is between 2 and 4 AM each day, about 19,000 to 25,000 this year. Peak use is about 2 to 3 PM and 2 to 3 times as many people, averaging about 55,000 in 2016 and peaking at 58,153.

This update ran on the RC channels last week. It contains some changes to the scripting language, a bug fix, and minor internal changes.

There is no new update for the RC channels, probably next week.

The Deploys thread did not update until late Tuesday. It usually updates late Monday or early Tuesday. Caleb Linden has been writing the updates for the last few months. I would guess this is not his favorite task.

So, the late posting and the election results diverted me away from getting my Tuesday SL News article published.

Second Life Third Party Dev’s Meeting 2016 w/44

Oz Linden was saying on last Friday that one more bug fix coming for the RC Second Life Bento Viewer version 5.0.0.321250. Then it will be a candidate for release as the main viewer. This means we will very likely have Project Bento this year and may be before Thanksgiving.

RC Second Life Maintenance Viewer version 4.1.2.321183 is doing well. It could and likely will release before the Bento viewer.

While the order of release is not clear, inside or outside the Lab, the Lindens do expect one to release before Thanksgiving, in a couple of week and the other will become the default a couple weeks after first of December.

Second Life: Prim Allowance

I’ve reported on the rumors that started in earnest Tuesday. There was a trickle of rumor the week before… what happened was the RC channels got the update from 15,000 prims to 22,500. A few people noticed and wondered, speculated. But, on Tuesday the main channel got the server upgrade that raised the limit on way more regions in the mainland.

The upgrade is rolling to the mainland as a test. Over the next couple of months it will continue rolling out to more of the grid. The private regions will be last as the Lindens want all the problems out before it moves to what they consider their premium product. Patrick would like to have it all rolled out before Thanksgiving (US holiday). But, the estimate is 2 months… he is being conservative.

There is an option to take a region to 30,000 prims. There will be a cost and there is a Premium membership aspect too. But, that may be a couple of months away. The 30 limit is toward the end of the testing period.

In testing they took the prim count up near 80-100k and found no measurable server side lag. However, it could be a problem for older computers. I’m so glad I built a new computer. Now if the Samsungs just weren’t burning up…
