Protesting in Second Life

Hamlet has run a couple of articles about fat chicks protesting a store with the sign ‘No Fat Chicks’. (Link) Everyone commenting seems to think this is a serious ‘body shaming’ issue.

Hamlet made an effort to avoid promoting the store with The Sign, ‘No Fat Chicks’. But, the brand name is visible in the images he used so it doesn’t take long to figure out which store is being talked about, Back to Graceful.

The Protest

It is hard to tell how the protest is going. Hamlet saw a bunch of people protesting. This morning there are 2 and they show as AFK. I suppose protests are boring…

Reading the articles and the follow-on comments, no one talks about basic principles or philosophical ideals. Seems most espouse narcissistic arrogance, situational ethics, and personal preferences. Protesters never seem overly bright to me. Emotional, yes. Activists seem to hold the brain trust. But, what’s the difference? Continue reading

Main channel updates to #17.09.22.508905. This version has improvements to email sending, requiring you to have verified your email address. I am a bit confused if they have activated this feature making verification mandatory or not.

Blue Steel, Le Tigre, and Magnum update to #17.09.29.509228. This version fixes that object return stuff after a roll-update as described in;

Discussion at the Server-Scripting UG makes it clear the EEP (Extended Environment Proj – or Improved Windlight) has no effect on SL Wind. Continue reading

Second Life – Content Creation UG Meeting 2017 w39

I am using Medhue’s video for my index. He has one of the new 21:9 ratio screens. So, you’ll likely see a big letterbox display like I see on my 16:9 screen. Medhue streams the meeting live. The resulting video gets saved as 720p video, which is fuzzy if you take it full screen.

INDEX

00:00 – Medhue setting up and getting the stream going.

03:30 – Vir Linden says they are submitting a project viewer to QA soon. Provided they do not find something horribly wrong, we will soon have a project viewer. I think there is a good possibility we will see a viewer in October… if things go well.

04:00 – Vir is working on transform matrices for attached animesh. He feels he has it to the place users can start helping with the testing. So, a project viewer will soon release.

Transform matrices are about how the animesh’s vertices get moved as the avatar moves and the animesh animates. Continue reading

Servers

The main channel is being restarted and updated with version #17.09.14.508549. The updated is described in the release notes as; Improvements to address some problems that could degrade simulator performance in rare cases. I think these are the fixes for some of the recovery problems we see after the SL system goes down. Users attempting to login in mass after an outage create a rare and unique set of problems for the system.

Server-Scripting UG 2017-09-26

Blue Steel and Le Tigre are possibly going to update, but maybe not. As of this morning as I write the Lindens have not decided.

Magnum is getting #17.09.22.508905. This is an update described as; Improvements to email verification logic. My understanding is a hand comes out of the screen, grabs you by the neck and shakes you, then compares your face to the one DMV has on file… The improvement is in the system response message being updated from ‘Yeah, it’s them’ to a stately ‘Verified’.

…Actually… I have no clue… But, from the Server-Scripting meeting today the word is this is part of the change that will eventually refuse to send email to unverified email addresses. For now, they are still sending. But, someday.

There also have been some glitches with the Glytch creatures. I suspect lots of people are playing the new game. So, this may be an overload thing.

It will be interesting to see if stores start adding Glytches to their regions to attract people. Continue reading

Second Life Third-Party Dev Meeting 2017 w38

The Alex Ivy 64-bit viewer will update early next week (#39). The last couple of blocking bugs are being fixed. Oz Linden thinks they are probably down to 1 problem last blocking problem, pipeline stalls. A special branch of the viewer is designed to find and fix that problem. Those experience the problem will get a copy of it for testing.

Voice is getting a new SDK update. It addresses couple long-standing problems.

There is a fix in Linden Viewers where the Lindens extended the retry time. So, they are being more successful connecting to voice. It takes longer to connect when there are problems, but it is more successful. If there are no problems, it is a quick connect.

Manually killing the viewer’s voice server prevents it restarting as it once did. Now, restart the viewer to kill and start the voice server. Then it works.

The Maintenance viewer just went out a couple of hours before the meeting (Friday noon). It uses new Vivox SDK. This version is Not compatible with previous versions. Some third-party viewers and Linux versions commonly require users to copy the app from the Linden viewer and drop it in the third-party viewer. Or to use older versions of the voice app with new versions of the viewer, for various reasons. That is not going to work.

Now the viewer and voice app will need to be versions made after the change to the new Vivox SDK are built in. Continue reading

SL’s new Grid Wide Experience

The new experience is titled Tyrah & the Curse of the Magical Glytches. (TCMG) The intro video is here…

I think it is way funny.

The announcement is here: Introducing a New Grid-Wide Experience. The announcement tells you how to get started and the rules…

You can have Glytches, the bad guys, on your private parcels. For the ‘how to’ on that see the Official TCMG Wiki page.

Check out the announcement and wiki page to get started collecting and I suppose imprisoning Glytches to save the grid.

Magnum will update to version #17.09.14.508533. It fixes BUG-100505 – “llGetEnv (“agent_limit”) is returning an empty string in Magnum, Le Tigre and Blue Steel regions.”
