Second Life News 2013-14

We are a little light on news in Second Life™. The server updates are toward the end. I think to some extent things are hung up with CHUI – Chat Hub User Interface. There are some problems in the code. The Lindens are thinking one more Beta version of the CHUI Viewer is going to be needed before they can complete it. I suspect we will see that this week.

They have been fixing things;

  • CHUI-799 FIXED Notification is not given to user when they select only friends and groups can IM me
  • CHUI-855 FIXED Text entry bar auto expand does not resize
  • CHUI-896 FIXED Line flashing and FUI button flashing not working correctly for CHUI notifications
  • CHUI-903 FIXED Don’t show toasts if Session floater is torn-off and in focus.
  • CHUI-905 Fixed Viewer crashes while using Insert keyboard key in chat

They are behind in fixes. Plus a number of problems related to CHUI are not being reported in CHUIBUG. They are being reported in other areas, like the general BUG section.

There are some deep concepts that will react with people’s individual philosophies and ethics. If you are one that has not has not examined your philosophy and concepts of right and wrong (Plato – unexamined life), this cast may bounce you all over the place. In which case, I suggest you ask yourself why you react as you do.

However you approach this cast, take time to think before reacting. I was going to put my comments and thoughts at the end. But, decided that will take too long and I want to get this out.

Interesting Things in Second Life

During the run up to Second Life’s birthdays we see some blogging about the past, present, and future. This 10th birthday (SL10B) is no different. There are funny, interesting, sad, New, and a whole range of other things turning up.

Blender-Avastar

Iris Ophelia on Hamlet’s New World Notes has an article about the Avastar plug-in for Blender. Iris is suggesting that Avastar be used by designers to create a better SL avatar.

Well, it is possible. But, that still leaves lots of problems unanswered. However, I do think Avastar is currently the best answer available for many of the challenges we have in making clothes, avatars, and animations.

Wackadoodles

These wackadoodle people show up in so many places… it gets infuriating. I see where Jessica Lyon responded to one in the Firestorm Viewer blog. I mention this because I am impressed by her statesman like response. Well done Jessica.

The blog article is announcing the re-opening of the Firestorm Viewer’s Preview Group. This is a group that will get Firestorm’s Beta version of their viewer. The team wants people that will help them test the viewer before it goes to main release.

Just as the Lab rolls server updates to 30% of the main grid for testing in a more diverse environment so too, the FS Team needs a larger selection of equipment and driver versions running their viewer before making a final release.

So, if you are interested in helping the team, check out: Feeling Brave? If you are NOT willing to file JIRA bug reports, please don’t bother.
