Interesting #SL Things in the Background

BUG-81

BUG-81 – add the number of groups you’re in to the bottom of the group list. I’m not sure that is the exact title, I can’t read the JIRA. Whatever, this is a feature in Marine Kelley’s RLViewer and is in a beta version of Dolphin 3. The code is being contributed to the SL Viewer project. So, we may see it in a future version of the SL Viewer.

It would be nice to have a count of the groups I’m in. Once upon a time we could click WATCH and follow progress on the JIRA item and hopefully give the Lab an idea of how many were interested in the feature.

BUG-59

BUG-59 – Add a GO TO LINE # to the script editor. (Not exact) This would add the ability to enter a line number and have the script editor scroll to that line. Could be handy. We’ll see it in Third Party Viewers and probably the SL Viewer.

RLV API

The Retrained Love Viewer has features not included in the SL Viewer. These are features that in a technical sense allow a viewer to be programmed to accept instructions from another viewer or scripted object. There are a number of possible uses beyond dominate/submissive play.

Finding Viewer Reviews

You can find all the published reviews of any viewer by Googling (that IS the preferred spelling – I checked) using a search term like: [Name] Viewer Review. The symbols [ ] denote text you replace.

To find my reviews look in the top menu for Viewers and select a name in the drop down. Not all the viewers have a page of their own. There is no reason for a viewer being listed or not other than I choose to make the page. I generally do that when I think it is handy for me.

If a viewer is not listed in the top menu, look in the left column for the Category drop down selector. You’ll find more viewer names there. If the name is not in Categories, I haven’t reviewed it.

Due Diligence

I suggest you be careful about who’s reviews you believe. There are hoax and scam viewers out there. The people that have made them have also made some bogus reviews. You’ll find them in various places. If you find a review here, on Inara’s blog, or SLUniverse you can be pretty sure it is a legitimate viewer review.

There are other sites that do good reviews. I’m not going to try and list them. I would miss some for sure. Just make sure you look at 2 or 3 sources before using a viewer for an Payment Enabled SL account.

Also… don’t take what I say as PROOF a viewer is safe. I often use a viewer for weeks or months on an account that does not have payment info.

Remember. It is your money and your responsibility to decide whether you think a viewer is safe. The Emerald Viewer scandal should have taught us that is no easy task.

Group Edit Update Week 37

Update: The JIRA post was updated 07/Sep/12 5:07 PM. ADITI regions Aglia and Chooqu Clone have the new server code.

Group Edit changes are moving forward. The server program with the changes was being built (compiled) on September 7th. My previous article included links to the Project viewer and the JIRA. The test regions in ADITI will be posted in the JIRA.

JIRA – SVC-4968 – Group won’t load – too many members

For now, bugs found by Third Party Viewer Developers won’t be able to be added to this SL JIRA item, unless they are individually added to the correct JIRA groups. You can tell if you are in the group by looking at the bottom of the JIRA item’s page. If there is a Comment Button, you are in the right group, provided the item has not been closed.

Radegast Viewer 2.6

I’ve seen this viewer appearing in Inara Pey’s Viewer Round Up’s. She also did a good review of Radegast 2.2 in early August. I saw some information on the OSGrid forum that interested me so I did some checking.

Radegast Viewer Splash Screen

Between Inara’s review and the Radegast Wiki one can get a good impression of how the viewer works.

Kokua Viewer Project Update

You probably know the Kokua Viewer is the replacement for the Imprudence viewer. There are alpha or experimental versions of the viewer that you can use on Second Life and OpenSim grids.

Kokua/Imprudence Viewers

You probably don’t know they are up to version 3.3.4.23807, which is based on the Second Life™ viewer code version 3.3.4 Release 3.

The Kokua blog is: Kokua/Imprudence Blog, not very original, but very practical.

The Kokua Viewer Download… looking for a link? There really isn’t one. There is no official release of the Kokua viewer. There is however an experimental version you can use… for testing of course.  Today’s current Kokua Viewer download is here. This will change as time passes. The link should remain live over time as it is into a wiki release notes page.

JIRA Change Continued

We have lots of speculation on why the Lindens made the JIRA change. I think we have a bit more evidence as to the reason. As I think it was mostly from the abusive posts in the JIRA, I may read too much in this. But, I think I’m pretty much on point.

This appeared in the Deploys thread this week.

p.s. If you are interested in helping test Second Life in beta please join the group “Second Life Beta” in-world. We also have an email list where we communicate upcoming projects and how you can help. (https://lists.secondlife.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/server-beta ) Once a week we meet on ADITI to discuss new features, new bugs, new fixes, and other fun stuff. You are more than welcome. Information is here: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Server_Beta_User_Group

This is not a forum thread for off-topic and unproductive ranting. I will no longer tolerate it. This forum thread is to discuss newly found issues in the Release Candidate channels. If you feel the need to have your opinions heard on topics unrelated to new bugs then please start your own thread. If an individual continues to post unproductive and off-topic comments I will take measures to remedy that.

If you are unsure about your posting please read this: “Linden Lab Official:Community Participation Guidelines”

You can make your own call as to whether the Lab has changed things due to abusive people or not.
