Second Life News 2018 w23

From the Third-Party Dev UG meeting June 1, 2018 we have some news. Plus, the usual stuff.

Severs

The main channel moves up to version #18.05.25.515749. This version includes;

  • Added server-side support for an upcoming capability to deliver estate information to estate owners and managers
  • Internal fixes

Once the Estate Tools improvements are added to the viewer, the tools will be live. The improvements are mostly about easier editing of ban lists.

KCK Harvy Dress – Bad Girls Region

The three RC channels get version #18.05.30.515812. This version has a few user visible changes;

  • Additional work to support localized Abuse Report categories
  • Shaved a few nanoseconds off a check for each object update, as part of ongoing performance improvements
  • Stopped logging a trivial message
  • Internal fixes

Not long ago we were teased with information that not all ‘internal fixes’ are security things. Some are to support SL15B surprises. Continue reading

NVIDIA 1180 Rumors

The release date is the big rumor. It ranges from July to September 2018.

It also looks like NVIDIA may be the only manufacturer releasing a major video card in 2018. The collection of information available as of June 2nd, 2018 is in this nerdy video.

The TL:DR take away is it will be the best card of 2018 (…is that because it is the ONLY card?), pricy, somewhat faster but no one is for sure, will use the newest GDDR6 VRAM which is in short supply… But, this is only speculation even when based on educated guesses.

From an earlier video we get more specific details and for the visually oriented (aren’t all SL peeps visually oriented?) it is in an easier to compare format. Continue reading

Second Life’s Content Creators’ UG May 31, 2018

My Thursdays have been busy. I’ve been missing the Content Creators’ meetings. Today I made it. There is some  new news.

The meeting has moved back to Animesh4, ADITI, Second Life ™. Took a minute or two to track them down. Then my OBS wasn’t picking up the audio. It took me a bit to figure out what was wrong. The video is missing the first 10 minutes.

Video Index

00:10 – The Land Impact cost for Animesh has been reduced from 200 to 15 plus additional cost for the total polygon count and kickers for LoD use. Poor LoD will drive up the cost.

This actually changed a couple of months ago. Vir Linden posted about the changes here: Animesh – Updated Limits and Cost Formulas.

I think the current RC Animesh viewer has these changes.

03:20 – All cost formulas in use have problems. Lindens are working on it.

04:00 – Stress testing for Animesh… most of the testing was done during Bento development. Continue reading

Second Life 2018 Road Map?

Designing Worlds has done an interview with Linden Lab’s™ CEO, Ebbe Altberg. You can see their video of the interview here, Designing Worlds DW370 – Ebbe Interviewed. (Run time 1hr 51min)

Ebbe Altberg 5/2018 – Designing Worlds Interview

There is talk of a road map for Second Life™. This ‘map’ apparently isn’t a published document. The interview focuses on where Ebbe is taking Second Life. So, I take it as a word picture.

However, Ebbe does talk about where they hope to take SL and what will happen with various aspects of SL.

If the video is too long for you, check Inara’s article. She has a summary of the interview. Designing Worlds In Conversation With Ebbe Altberg – Transcript + Audio.

Second Life News 2018 w22

Monday was a US holiday, Memorial Day. So, today is the Lab’s first workday this week. As of 10 AM SLT this morning there is no Deploy post. But, there is some HOT new news today. See the Other News section.

From the Server-Scripting meeting, Simon Linden: Let’s see … for server news, we had a rollback last week of the RC channels for a bug.  I think there was a post somewhere about that. We’re going to have updates out tomorrow that have that fixed … and possibly another release that has a few other items in it.  It’s all internal changes, as far as I know.

M.2 vs NVMe – Fast or Slow SSD?

In the world of Solid State Drives (SSD) we have new tech most home users haven’t heard of. So, the idea is they can put in an SSD and it will be fast, which is wrong. Only if hardware is matched and properly installed will it be fast.

The video is bit long winded but, it clearly explains what has to be matched and the settings issue.

He did not mention the need for the motherboard to have ample PCIe channels. If one pours all this data into a PCIe bus with only 8 channels nothing is going to be fast. Your new video card likely wants 16 channels but will work with 4… not well. With an SSD wanting 4 channels the motherboard is forced to divide up channels.

If you have anything else using PCIe… things get really crowded.

So, installing an SSD is easy and simple. Getting it to perform at the rated specs is complicated. Not rocket science, just a bunch of details one has to know about.

Intel vs AMD for Second Life

Second Life™ users want performance. Most of you know Second Life is NOT an optimized game world but rather a hobbyists-built world that can drag even the best gaming machine down to single digit frame rates. So, performance is a thing among SL users.

CPUs are the heart of performance with the GPU being the legs.

Both Intel and AMD have new CPUs out. So, the natural question is which is best for running Second Life?

In general, this is how the two stack up in head to head testing. (8+ min)

For some data processing in the beginning AMD is noticeably ahead. Yet in the games similar to Second Life the Intel consistently renders about 5±% more frames. Continue reading

Mystery Booms and Bangs Around the World

I am curious. So, my interests are wide ranging. For years I’ve heard of unexplained booms and UFOs. (Now renamed Anomalous Aerial Vehicles – AAVs.) But, I have yet to find people providing realistic explanations or even good evidence. So, it is easy write these reports off as part of the conspiracy crowd’s enchantment. But, good evidence is mounting. Mostly due to the proliferation of cameras and microphones around the world.

The number of booms reported and RECORDED is increasing. So, something is making noise. Booms are common in SoCal. We have Camp Pendleton and their artillery practice. But, that doesn’t explain it for most of the world nor even all the booms in SoCal. The marines do not practice every day.

This is one of the more ‘reasonable’ sounding videos proclaiming we do not know. However, if one looks at the collection of videos posted in this channel… if your skepticism doesn’t jump to the red zone, you you likely should be classed as gullible.   Continue reading
