Second Life News 2013-23 #2

There is a bit of news coming from various places.

SSA

Server Side Appearance has a problem that the Lindens have been working on for the past week. Well, thinking about, I’m not sure they are writing code. I first mentioned the problem of corrupting modifiable eyes and skin when going in and out of SSA enabled and disabled regions here: SSA Coming Not Too Soon.

Some people say the problem is unique to the Phoenix Viewer. Latif Khalifa tried the SL Viewer 1.23, pre-SSA Singularity, Imprudence and Phoenix. But, only found the problem on Phoenix. Whirly Fizzle said. She could reproduce the problem on the SL Viewer 1.23. Whirly says old FS viewers were OK and did not have the problem.

There no rollout to the main channel this week. None of the release candidates made it through testing.

Release Channels

Blue Steel and Le Tigre will get a new package for testing. This package addresses the disconnection issue many have been experiencing. (BUG-2564) This is the one where numerous avatars in a region would suddenly be disconnected. It also included LSL scripts using HTTP connection being disconnected too.

Plus there is a crash mode fix.

Magnum will continue to run the package from last week: The Interest List improvement for faster rendering of a never be for visited region. The only change to this package is the adding of the disconnect-fix-code also running on Steel and Tigre.

SL10B Contest

The Lindens have announced a contest as part of the celebration of SL10B. The first place prize is a Homestead Region for four months. Second and Third place winners will get a homestead region for 2 months.

SSA Coming Not Too Soon

No one on the Linden side is saying WHEN we might see SSA (Server Side Appearance baking) roll out. Today at the Server Beta meeting we found one reason it is taking longer than anyone would like. I think the Lindens are ready for SSA to rollout. But, they have to get problems fixed and they have a dandy one.

SSA is in testing on the Preview Grid (ADITI). You can go into Testy Sandbox and Lagland to try it out. But, be warned, read the rest of this article first.

This bug is about SSA corrupting textures your avatar is wearing. Skin and eyes are definitely affected. It appears any Mod-OK skin is at risk.

Server Side Appearance Closer

Today Linden Lab posted an update on the Sunshine Project, which includes Server Side Appearance (SSA) (baking). You can see it here: Faster Avatar Loading on the Horizon.

New Production Viewer

New Production Viewer

This is a warning that failing to update your viewer is going to be a problem. In my mind it seems they are somewhat downplaying the aspect that this update is going to cripple users that fail to update. Those that like the old 1.23 viewer and older versions of Phoenix are going to need to change to a newer viewer. Singularity seems to be the viewer of choice for those users.  Continue reading

Second Life News 2013-22

You have probably figured out there is no roll or restart today. Because of the US holiday Memorial Day the rolls have been pushed back a day. The roll the main channel will happen on Wednesday. The RC rolls will happen on Thursday.

Main Channel

The main channel is getting the package running on the Magnum channel. This is the JSON package with a couple of fixes to JSON so that it properly handles quoted information. There are some other fixes; 2 crash modes are fixed and the ground sit fix for the ‘stand button’ is fixed.

Release Channels

This week all three channels will run the same package, at least that is what the Lindens were planning pre-holiday.

The package ran on Le Tigre last week. This is a package with Interest List fixes/improvements. Supposedly things will load a hair faster when you arrive in a region for the first time. It also includes another crash mode fix.

Other Stuff

There are a few complaints that region crossings have degraded. I haven’t seen that, but I seldom use vehicles.

A number of new users are running into extended bake fail for the first time. They post in forum and Answers asking what wrong. Seems like fewer of the Answers Helpers are reading the forum recently. So, I’ve seen some really dumb suggestions from relatively new users on how to fix the problem. Hopefully SSA will roll out in the next couple of weeks.

SSA

The word is that the code has rolled to the main grid and all channels there. This is a feature that can be enabled and disabled region by region. Word is no main grid regions are enabled, yet. Everyone I have asked about AGNI regions being enabled has referred me to Nyx Linden. So, I may learn something today.

There was no roll to the main channel this week. The grids did restart. I’m not sure why. Well, some that I was on Tuesday morning were restarting.

I have no idea where this is...

RC Channels

This week we have 3, I hope, packages running in the RC channels.

Blue Steel
This channel is running a revised Experience Tools package, still nothing to see. No new information about the tools or the server changes.  Continue reading

Priorities… Work flow at the Lab changes based on what is important at the time. Baker Linden was working on the Group Ban features. That work is on hold as he works on bugs in display names, mute lists, and searches for names.

Server Beta 2013-19 Meeting

Server Beta 2013-19 Meeting

Seems there is a leading space problem in those features. So, at some point leading and trailing spaces will not be allowed in Display Names. The system is going to remove them. You can try to enter them but they system will strip them off when it saves the value.  Continue reading
