Using the EEP Viewer – Second Life

The Enhanced Environment Project is progressing and nearing completion. Thursday Feb 14, 2019 Rider Linden updated us on where they were in development. (Ref) He is expecting the project to move to RC status very soon™. It is now available to test in its ‘project status’ in the Blue Steel and Le Tigre channels of the main Second Life™ grid. So, it may be time to start playing with the feature.

Also, with this feature comes a new item, EEP-Windlight settings, that can be sold on the market place and traded among users. If you have a talent for making sunsets, this may be your niche.

EEP and Non-EEP Viewers Feb 2019

You can get a copy of the Enhanced Environment Project viewer in the Second Life™ Alternate Viewers. As I write we are on version 6.0.2.524123 of this project viewer. It installs in its own directory. So, it won’t break or affect any of your other installed viewers. Updates to this viewer are mandatory. Meaning when a new version of the Project or RC viewer is released you have to install the update to continue using it.

NOTICE: If you click SLURLs to open your viewer and login into the SLURL’s region, installing any viewer will change which viewer Windows uses. Windows uses the last viewer installed. There are tools and tutorials that will help you tell Windows which viewer you prefer for those clicks. See SLURL Proxy.

Second Life News 2019 w07

The planned roll out to the main channel (leaving us running #19.01.25.523656) was canceled due to a bug in the logging. So, no restart to the main channel. Main channel regions got a restart last week.

The Deploy notice was posted Monday and revised Tuesday. So, if you are confused, it is because of late breaking changes.

Blue Steel and Le Tigre will update to #19.02.08.524296. This includes the EEP feature, which is to being installed in more regions fo broader testing.

Bits and Bites of Second & Real Life 2019 w07

Focus Magazine is for those of us that enjoy taking snapshots in-world. This issue their featured Second Life™ photographer is Sari. Some of her nice images are in the magazine.

Cover Focus Magazine – Feb 2019

The magazine covers things related to SL photographers’ interests. Some homes and stuff, clothes, poses, backdrops, photo locations, skins, places, and even an advice column.

You can join the group Too Sexy for This Group to get your monthly copy. This group is the complimentary part of the Flickr group Too Sexy for this Group! Second Life. These are sexy groups. Less lewd and more erotic than most.

The Linden event Special Valentine’s Day Hug and Dunk has been announced, Wednesday 2/6. See the announcement here. On Thursday, February 14th from 10am-12pm, drop by the Isle of View (SURL) for a chance to hug and/or dunk some Lindens.

Russia – By April 1 of this year the Russian government plans to have taken full control of the Internet within Russia and to test that control by disconnecting the Russian Internet from the rest of the world. There is no announced date for the disconnect. It is a test and the connection will be restored. But, for a time Russians will be isolated. (Ref BBC)

Second Life News + 3rd Party 2019 w05 and 06

The third-party Dev UG meeting was short and griefed. The video is here. Pantera Północy, the videographer, edited most of the griefing out. Annoying.

Servers

The main channel got an update, #19.01.25.523656. Has logging to gather baseline information on simulator performance in various areas of interest and additional internal logging. So, they are now getting data from the majority of the grid.

What To Wear

If you drive, fly, or sail now would be a good week to be active. Of course, Tuesday afternoon is a good day to drive, fly, or sail as the most regions have just been restarted.

Second Life Posing

Those of us taking snapshots in Second Life™ run into the problem of getting the avatar in the position we want. I think I’m up on the posing tricks for Second Life. But obviously the poser I’ll talk about below shows I’m not totally up.

Playful by Bryce Sun @ Flickr

Bryce Sun made this image. I think it is just awesome. And in the description Bryce explained how the pose was done. Oh… there is a Fate Hand Poser HUD. I didn’t know… or forgot if I ever did. This HUD came out about the time Bento did, 2016. It is now in version 2.5 (L$695). The video I show here is made using version 1.0.

In a way this is a bit like the poser in the Black Dragon Viewer. The difference is the graphical interface. Black Dragon has a poser that is great fun. The problem is if you haven’t been animating in Second Life you don’t know which bone name does what. It isn’t hard to figure out by guessing from the names, but you still have to figure some of it out.

Fusion Energy 2019

The idea of green renewable energy as currently pushed by proponents is failing. The mainstream media runs an echo chamber that is like a church. One only hears the good Word and fire and brimstone for those that ignore it. But, dig into the numbers and real costs, look at those going with wind and solar, think Australia and their blackouts, and the scale of what is needed. It is not going to work.

2017-07-22_03-05-39

2017 – In a parking lot…

Fusion power offers the true attainable green dream. Burn hydrogen, as the sun does, get helium. A gram of hydrogen is the equivalent of 10 tons of coal. Fusion is constant. No batteries needed. No down time on no wind days. Fusion can happen at night too, solar’s problem.

Second Life News 2019 w05

There is no Deploys thread this week. From the Server-Scripting UG we hear,

[12:05] Simon Linden: For server news, there wasn’t an update to the main channel today but tomorrow will see 3 different RCs
[12:06] Simon Linden: We’ll have a new maintenance update in one channel
[12:06] Simon Linden: Another that only has internal changes
[12:07] Simon Linden: and _maybe_ an update for the EEP servers, but Rider is going after a bug that’s blocking that from moving forward
[12:07] Joe Magarac (animats): The “time is stuck” bug?
[12:07] Simon Linden: exactly Joe
[12:07] Simon Linden: yeah that one is a show-stopper …. and he’s working on it right now

Server-Scripting Meeting

So, no roll to the main channels and 3 updates likely coming to the RC channels Wednesday.

Second Life vs IMVU

As best I can tell people use either Second Life or IMVU. It may just be the circles I run in but, I never hear people saying they play in both. I suspect a few do. So, the Reddit threat on Second Life or IMVU? Caught my attention. For a rational discussion it would seem people would need to have experienced both.

There aren’t many people in the conversation so far. Those engaging so far have been in both. Yay!

Karma Lighthouse

The word for new people trying SL is to stay out of the Safe Hubs. I agree. If you have seen the video Hamlet pointed to in Reddit’s Griefer-Free /SecondLife Community you’ll probably agree it represents the mentality found in the Safe Hubs. Sadly pathetic.

The discussion about the video is getting pretty long. Hamlet labels it ‘special’. I suppose if one takes the video and discussion at face value it is pretty special. Otherwise it is a mash up of various people on about whatever is their thing.
