Third-Party Dev UG Meeting 2017 w40

Rider Linden filled in for Oz Linden for this meeting. Rider is the guy doing the Windlight changes. So, he generally has his head buried in EEP and apparently isn’t that much into general viewer status. We didn’t get much detail.

In server news, the first stage in sending to only to verified email addresses rolled out. Next will be a server roll and viewer change to enable/disable the checkbox in the viewer for Send Email. The server will tell the viewer to disable that checkbox in Preferences if you have not verified the email address you use with your Linden account.

Next meeting November 3rd.

For Alex Ivy, the 64-bit viewer, the Lindens are working on a potential fix for the texture crashes.

Another voice update is coming. Continue reading

Protesting in Second Life

Hamlet has run a couple of articles about fat chicks protesting a store with the sign ‘No Fat Chicks’. (Link) Everyone commenting seems to think this is a serious ‘body shaming’ issue.

Hamlet made an effort to avoid promoting the store with The Sign, ‘No Fat Chicks’. But, the brand name is visible in the images he used so it doesn’t take long to figure out which store is being talked about, Back to Graceful.

The Protest

It is hard to tell how the protest is going. Hamlet saw a bunch of people protesting. This morning there are 2 and they show as AFK. I suppose protests are boring…

Reading the articles and the follow-on comments, no one talks about basic principles or philosophical ideals. Seems most espouse narcissistic arrogance, situational ethics, and personal preferences. Protesters never seem overly bright to me. Emotional, yes. Activists seem to hold the brain trust. But, what’s the difference? Continue reading

Second Life News 2017 w40

Servers

Main channel updates to #17.09.22.508905. This version has improvements to email sending, requiring you to have verified your email address. I am a bit confused if they have activated this feature making verification mandatory or not.

Blue Steel, Le Tigre, and Magnum update to #17.09.29.509228. This version fixes that object return stuff after a roll-update as described in;

Discussion at the Server-Scripting UG makes it clear the EEP (Extended Environment Proj – or Improved Windlight) has no effect on SL Wind. Continue reading

Sansar Did What?

They published the general development roadmap (sort of): Coming Soon to Sansar – Upcoming Releases.

A development roadmap lists those things that the developers actually plan to develop. The ‘map’ part denotes the order in which they will develop them. The Lindens did include that information. But, there isn’t much.

Sansar 2017 – Time & Space

Development Road Maps generally extend beyond the next two updates. I don’t really see that in this ‘map’. So, it is a short highway. One doesn’t go far before hitting the ‘under construction’ signs and finds the road closed.

The ‘Discovery’ update will include;

  • A searchable Atlas
  • Improved desktop-mode features, like being able to pick things up

Following Discovery will be a ‘Friends’ update, sounds like a cross between SL’s What’s Hot, Events, better Help, and people search.

Then they say… ‘more to come’. Well Duh!  Continue reading

AvaStar 2.1 Released 10/1

Yay! We have a final release version, 2.1. The official announcement is here: AvaStar 2.1.

The price for 2.1 is:

  • Upgrade from AvaStar-1 for just 3500 Linden$ (or 14 US$)
  • Get a new license for just 6500 Linden$ (or 27 US$)

Lindens are going for L$265/US$1 as I write this. $L6,500/265=US$24.53 or is that L$265 x 27 for L$7,155? Whether $24 or $27, it is worth it.

If you are undecided about purchasing, I recommend you do. AvaStar saves one work on a number of tedious tasks required to get mesh working in SL as it does in Blender …or maybe turn that around… and handles some hidden gotchas in the SL design process. Save time and reduce your learning curve, buy it.

I use it… maybe that is a good thing… For animation and modeling of things going to SL, I think it is great.
