Firestorm 5.07 Released – Should you update? Why?

Tuesday the 19th, a new Firestorm Viewer version was released, 5.0.7.52912.

You can download and install this new version. There is no need to remove the previous version you are using. Some of us (yes, me) have noticed it crashes shortly after its first launch. On the second and subsequent launches, it seems fine.

I suggest you restart your computer before installing. Inara in her review of this release (here), recommends backing up your viewer settings before starting the install. I didn’t have to restore any settings. BUT… if you are changing from 32 to 64-bit version, a settings backup is a good idea.

The Firestorm team has a goal to release an update every 3 months. It has been 6 months since the last release. So, there is a lot of work in this new release. Plus, they say it is very well tested.

This version has a load of fixes. See the viewer’s Change Log, release notes to most of us. Firestorm peeps say they are current with the Linden Viewer 5.0.5. The current Linden Viewer is 5.0.6 and Alex Ivy is on 5.0.7. These additional Linden versions have no new features to get you excited, but they do have new fixes and nice things. Nothing you’ll likely notice as missing from Firestorm 5.0.7.

Upload Change

Being able to select which folder your uploads go to by default is a nice addition. It gives me more control over where my creations, images-textures and mesh, is a big help.

Abuse

Oh… oh… new tools for abusing people… NOT!!! The Abuse Reporting tools have improved. One improvement is the feature that allows use of the last Abuse Image after a restart. Handy.

Grid Status

Firestorm 5.0.7 New Grid Status Button

The Linden 5.0.7 has a new button for jumping to the Grid Status web page. This button has now been added to the Firestorm viewer. It takes you to the same webpage as the Linden viewer does.

I have noticed that Firestorm is much slower than the Linden viewer when opening web pages in a viewer panel. Enough so that I find it a significant annoyance.

New Group Ability

Group managers will now be able to add an ability for members to avoid the default landing point. Of course, this is for areas owned/controlled by the group.

There are many regions that have a default landing point. Everyone teleporting in can be forced to a single point. For membership regions, this is a good thing and kind of a drag. Placing new people at a registration and rules place is good. Once you have joined a group to have access to a region, landing at the registration point gets old. This new feature will change that. Members can override the ‘forced’ and use a Landmark to set their entrance point.

Also, this should alleviate the problem of double-click teleport bouncing you back to a single landing point.

Avatar Blocking

You now have choices. You can block voice, text, particles, object sounds, and/or all of them.

Looking through my block list I find blocking an avatar selects all the choices for the block. Some avatars are only text blocked. I assume I blocked them from chat rather than by clicking on the avatar.

Objects are just blocked. No choices.

Trash

The whole trash thing is changing. You’ll see next time you take out the trash. Because of spontaneously generated trash from stuff you want… these changes have been made to remove the chance of accidental discarding.

Also, these changes should remind you to look at your trash, no matter how ugly he is, before deleting. The hope is that stuff spontaneously moved into trash will be recognized and removed before emptying trash.

See: BUG-100541.

And there is also a new Debug Setting to disable the new “are you sure” prompts in the new Trash empty process. So, you can still blow away stuff without considering what you are deleting…

Copy Outfit

There is a new feature that allows you to right click the Current Outfit Folder (COF) and copy it to the system clipboard. Example:
