Snowstorm's Second Life Viewer Progress

Snowstorm
Snowstorm Project

If you don’t already know, the Snowstorm Project is the SL Viewer (SLV) development project. There are several things currently going on that will affect new releases of the viewer. These are the ones I found interesting.

Prim Alignment Tool

Many of you have seen the Qarl Fizz Prim Alignment Tool that is now starting to appear in TPV’s. It is in the Imprudence Experimental viewer. It is great. See: Qarl Fizz Prim Alignment Tool

Because of some technicalities about signing agreements and code licensing it appears Linden Lab cannot just ‘use’ the code. So, whether they are going to talk to Qarl and come to some agreement or write their own version of alignment has not been decided. Whatever, the feature is in the backlog. You can vote for the feature here: STORM-468 Add Qarl Fizz Prim Alignment Code to SLV2

Second Life Viewer Crashes While Starting

Last Updated: 2010-11-9

Several people are having problems with the SLV2 crashing on start. Not only does the SLV2 do this so do several other viewers. There are a number of reasons for the crashes. Usually a re-install of the viewer fixes the problems, but when it does not fix the problem, what to do?

System Restore

Try a System Restore to a time when things were working. This is often the easiest fix. XP How ToVista/Win7 How To

Reboot your modem and any routers. Reboot your computer. Check for new video and sound drivers.

Second Life Search Frustration

undersea
Sea Linden

I saw another frustrated resident complaining about Second Life Search. The responses on the topic when I was reading it shows most residents have no idea what is going on inside Linden Lab. One person thought no one oversees Search Development. I guess they missed Rosedale at SLCC 2010. I took the time to write a long reply and decided to use it as a post here too. So, if you are one of those wondering about what is up with SL Search, read on.

If you don’t know, the Second Life Search Development Team is a 5 man team plus outside consulting resources. The team leader is Sea Linden. Some think it is Liana Linden, but I think she may have been in charge up until the layoffs shakeout. It is Sea that posts the update information on the SL Blogrum.

UPDATE: 2010-11-18 – Linden Lab has upgraded search, again. See: Recent Improvements to SL Search

Update: 2010-11-03: Be sure to click more

I think Kirsten’s viewer is probably the most advanced viewer currently out. I’m not saying it has the most power user features. But, it has the most SLV2 features working, and working as well or better than Linden Lab’s SLV2.2. I’m just now downloading this viewer and have yet to try it.

Second Life Server Updates

On Tuesdays we usually get new software for the grid. On Wednesday new software arrives on the Release Candidate areas of the grid. The big feature for the main grid is TMalloc, which is about memory allocation and providing information to Linden Lab (LL) for debugging the software. I think this may also provide some improvement for region crossings.

It looks like we are getting caught up on fixes and will start to see new or improved features coming out. Most of these features are still in the line of problem solving, but will do things in new ways, hopefully reducing lag and other problems.
