Second Life News 2014-23 #2

This week’s (23) server rolls returned the packages that briefly ran last week, until Wednesday evening’s re-roll that wiped them out. Yesterday (this week’s Wednesday) those were re-deployed with the only change being the security fix was added.

Le Tigre now has the Group Ban project package. With a Group Ban Project Viewer you can try out the feature. It is not 100% and won’t be until the update is rolled to the entire grid. This means for now you can group ban people. But, there are ways around the ban and those only close once the roll is grid wide.

Feedly Down

Today Feedly, a news aggregator, is down. That means I am out of touch with the world. Here is their announcement:

Denial of service attack

2:04am PST – Criminals are attacking feedly with a distributed denial of service attack (DDoS). The attacker is trying to extort us money to make it stop. We refused to give in and are working with our network providers to mitigate the attack as best as we can.

We are working in parallel with other victims of the same group and with law enforcement.

We want to apologize for the inconvenience. Please know that you data is safe and you will be able to re-access your feedly as soon as the attack is neutralized.

We will update this blog post as soon as we have more information:

Thank you for your understanding,

/Edwin and Seb

The time shown in the post cannot be right. That is probably a time zone error in a server setting.

Bogus AvaStar

Gaia Clary has posted that someone is selling a ripped off of AvaStar in the SL Market Place for L$8,000. The rip-off is an old version of AvaStar. The rip-off is here (so you know which one NOT to buy).

The real AvaStar is available at: http://blog.machinimatrix.org . AvaStar sells for US$27 or about  L$6,750.

Gaia filed a DMCA June 5th. As of this morning the rip-off remains on the Market Place.

Server Main Channel

There is no roll to the main channel this week. Last week the channel was re-rolled to fix a security issue that slipped through. But, there are no feature additions or changes.

RC Server Channels

Blue Steel was rolled to the same software as the main channel last Wednesday to fix the security issue mentioned above. This week the channel will get an updated version of the Inventory Update package. This is the AISv3 updated made as part of the Sunshine server side avatar baking project.

Le Tigre will get the Group Ban project with the security updates.

Blender 2.71 Update

The test build of Blender 2.71 is out. The release notes are here.

While 2.70a has some Cycles baking ability, 2.71 extends Cycles to include most of the abilities in the materials system associated with Blender Render. There are possibilities here for Second Life™ users.

There are some improvements in modeling and sculpting that may help those modeling for SL.

I see several changes in animation. I doubt those improvements will transfer into SL. But, they may improve our work flow.

See Blender.org for details and the release notes foe specifics.
