The main channel was updated with version #17.07.27.327933 this morning, Tuesday. Last week the main channel was running version #17.07.11.327548. Both of these are listed as having “internal changes”. Geek-speak for changing data reporting, debugging, and performance information… usually.

Blue Steel, Le Tigre, and Magnum were supposed to update to #17.07.27.327933 tomorrow, Wednesday. But, Simon tells us that isn’t going to happen. There probably won’t be a restart as they restarted with last week’s update. The Lindens try to restart regions once every two-weeks even if there is no planned update.

No big problem, but enough of one the Lindens decided to hold the RC update back. It had to do with regions names not being applied correctly in the restart, so they never appeared to come online.

The Deploys thread is dying. There is very little discussion or information to be gleaned from reading the posts. They are basically a day, time, and link to release notes. So, I suspect fewer people are reading the posts. I expect the posts to go away at some point.

Second Life: Catznip Viewer

A new beta release is out, Catznip-R12 (Beta 2) – May 3rd 2017. The download is here. I have yet to try the viewer’s new version. I gather that beyond just catching up to Linden features the inventory features have been extended. More details are available at Catznip Blog and Catznip R12: Three Days of Teasers.

catznip viewer display — too cute, like televisions with cat ears!

I like the inventory features being added. So, I have to decide if having a viewer for photos and machinima (Firestorm), another for latest features (Linden), and another for inventory (Catznip) is worth the effort or frustration. I would like to have all the features I use in one viewer, which just isn’t possible now. I hate being one viewer and needing a feature only in another.

Second Life: Inventory Help

There are loads of tutorials giving Second Life™ inventory management styles and suggestions. It is Kitty Barnett that is actually building helpful tools into the Inventory Panel. Kitty, having a 100K+ items in inventory has been finding using the inventory TEDIOUS. I can feel her.

These are the types of tools users think awesome and Lab programmers doubt they are worth the effort. I believe this type of improvement is something only someone using their inventory daily would think of and see its value.

So, being the programmer for the Catznip Viewer and using her inventory a lot, she is adding handy tools to her version of the viewer. To see what she is adding and why, see her series of articles titled: Three Days of Teasers.

Servers

This week there is no planned roll of the main channel servers.

The RC channels are getting a new package and will roll on Wednesday. According to the ‘deploys’ thread they all get the same package. This package includes:

  • Several internal fixes and two new internal logging modes
  • Another adjustment to fix issues with offline IM and Group Notice delivery reliability
  • Fixes an issue where large numbers of objects could be returned after a rolling restart

My understanding was the change for Estate Owner and Manager control of parcel access in a region was to be in this release but, I see no mention of it. Last week Oz, Grumpity, Caleb, and Mazidox Linden were all talking about it.

I thought we would be in the no change window all this week. But, the Lindens have decided to roll last week’s RC update to the main channel… or they automated the forum posting like they did the status reports… naw.

The package rolling to the main channel is listed as having ‘improved internal server logging’. So, it makes sense to me that there is little likelihood of new bugs being introduced by adding and changing logging features. The week in testing probably revealed no performance change problems for this package. So, why not roll it out?

Second Life: Third Party Viewers and Project Bento

I don’t cover the Third-Party Viewers as much as I used to. I think Project Bento is a change that will make any viewer without Bento capability obsolete. Some Third Party Viewers are already Bento capable. Here is what I have found.

…and I may have made mistakes about which viewer does and doesn’t have Bento capability. If you see one please correct me.
