Second Life News 2013-11 #2

New software rolled to the main and RC channels this week. There isn’t much to say about the rolls. We hit some problems with last week’s rolls. Fixes for those problems are in this week’s RC channels.

The main channel got the Large Object Rez upgrade that Baker Linden worked on. The idea was to place handling the rez tasks in separate threads. This allows the simulator to continue doing other tasks while a large link set is rezzed.

Blue Steel and Le Tigre are getting the same package. It fixes a crash mode. Presumably this is some exploit fix. I think that because almost nothing else is being said about it.

The Magnum channels got the package from last week with fixes for problem found last week. The known fixes are; region managers being exempted from Direct TP disable, neighboring region visibility issues, and bogus User Not Online error messages.  Continue reading

Second Life News 2013-11

In late February problems in ADITI were slowing down Third Part Party work on SSAB (Server Side Avatar Baking). Nyx Linden explained that some of the problems in the SSAB pile-on test were caused by inventory failures. The problem then becomes sorting out what is an ADITI Inventory issue and what is a SSAB issue.

In any event, some significant changes have been made to ADITI Inventory. Unfortunately the changes may not save you from problems if you change your password to trigger an inventory refresh. My experience has been to keep changing your password until it corrects. But, with these changes the Lindens are saying if a password change breaks your inventory, contact them and they will fix it.

New SSAB Pile-On

Two new pile-on tests are planned for this week. There will be a test using the SSAB Project viewer, which you can download now. That test will be after the Server Beta meeting Thursday in Morris, ADITI. The meeting starts at 3 PM SLT. The test will start whenever the meeting ends, scheduled for 4 PM. But, meeting do end early. So, be early.

Aditi Problems

Starting in mid 2012 we started to have inventory problems when logging into ADITI, the preview/beta grid. Recently the Lindens have been working on getting the problem resolved. I’m not sure how successful they have been as several of us have recently had problems.

Monty Linden has been posting in a forum thread about the problem. See: Beta grid login failed.

The problem can pop up when you change your password. Monty reports they are having a problem with inventory import when passwords change.

The ADITI grid uses the same asset servers as the main grid, but uses different inventory servers. There is a problem with the database on the ADITI inventory servers. Seems they tend to fill up. The solution is not as simple as buying a bigger hard disk. Inventory is a huge database handling complex data queries. Upgrading the hardware is apparently a complex and expensive thing. So, Simon Linden, I think Simon, told us that the hardware change evolved into a fix-the-process thing, which is in progress now.

The main channel of server software got a new package from the RC channels. This package ran on all three RC channels last week. It is a crash fix and not much more.

New

The Blue Steel and Le TigreRC channels are getting Baker Linden’s object rez performance improvement. This is a multi-threaded object rez addition. Simon Linden says, “There was a laggy bit of work the server used to do when rezzing objects that has been moved into a side thread.” Paraphrasing Simon, people will notice it most with complex objects and link sets with lots of scripts.

Apparently we may not see it speed up the rez… but, it will have less impact on the simulator as the sim won’t stop to process an object. I take this to mean any single objects will not necessarily rez faster but more objects should rez in less time. This can be thought of as changing from rezzing one after the other to parallel rezing, rezing several at once.

Today we found out for sure the software update running in the RC channels rolled to the main channel. This was a maintenance package with some bug and crash fixes and the improved region restart notification. For now the main channel and all the RC’s are running the same code.

Server-Scripting Meeting 2013-9

There are a few regions like Linden Realms and the Wilderness that are running different code. But, otherwise everyone is on the same code.

That sameness will be broken when the RC channels ALL roll to the same new package. The only published change is the repair of a crash mode that popped up a couple of weeks ago, this probably means a griefing fix. My guess is this fix touches multiple parts of the systems and needs as big a test base as possible. Or it could just mean no other packages made it through QA. We might find out later today or Thursday.  Continue reading

Server Side Avatar Baking – Nyx Linden gave us a bit of information about the results of the Thursday pile-on test at the Content & Mesh meeting today. The Linden goal was to collect data and that they did. The outcome is that when SSAB works, it works really well. But, it doesn’t always work.

The pile on test gave them new data on the known bugs and revealed a couple of new ones. Friday was spent analyzing the data. Now they are moving forward on fixing the problems. There will be another pile-on test, may be this week. But, we will have to wait and see how things go.  Continue reading

Second Life News 2013-8 #4

There is a little blow back on this rollout, nothing too dramatic.

The server restarting warning changed a bit. If you have the normal human mind, you may not notice the difference. But, it is there. This change is only in the RC channels for now.

New Notification

New Notification

The threaded object rez project hit a last minute bug and was held back from RC. The problem was if you rezzed a copyable object from your inventory, the object would disappear from your inventory, as though it was no-copy. You can imagine the problems that would cause.

I’ll list some other problems that ‘some’ people are noting. We don’t know yet if these are real problems or if they are part of the Interest List change. The bet is good that if they are real problems they are associated with the Interest List. So, if you are seeing these problems, file JIRA’s and let the Lindens know. If you don’t notice things, those things don’t need to be fixed…

Object Area Search

It is currently thought that the Interest List upgrade has broken Area Search in third party viewers (TPV). You should probably file JIRA’s for this problem with your viewer developer.

AO’s Crashes

Some are reporting TPV AO’s are crashing viewers now that Interest List is out… I am not sure I believe the problem and cause are related. Lots of people blame whatever they have last heard changed, which is reasonable but often inaccurate. You should probably file JIRA’s for this problem with your viewer developer.  Continue reading

The rollouts to the Main and RC’s should happen today and tomorrow as I reported yesterday. Simon Linden expects the maintenance package on Magnum to be promoted next week. But, that is a ways off. However, rollouts will return to the normal schedule next week.

Grey Goo – Tasty Planet Game – Read On

Maestro Linden changed the forum Deploys post to say a bug was found in the prim rez code running on Le Tigre. Also the Blue Steel performance improvements package ran into problems. Both will drop out of the RC channels and move back into QA. The crash mode code that ran on Le Tigre last week will roll to all the RC’s this week (8).  Continue reading
