A Couple of Events

Skin Burn 2

Today the Skin Burn 2 is happening. See: SKIN BURN 2011. This is sort of a Burn event for showing off skin. Not just plain skin, but decorative skin. The man will burn at 12:30 SLT/PST.

Fantasy Forest Build Project

Another event is coming in December. The Fantasy Forest Build Project runs from December 9 to 18 and is a building project. This one is a bit different than most build projects. It should be an interesting experience for those joining in.

The project is looking for adult region and landowners that have room for build platforms.

Contact Ginette Pinazzo or BBQBill Odriscoll to enter.

See: Fantasy Forest Build Project.

#SL Mesh News Week 45

I’m lagging getting this update posted. There have been other interesting things to do. Plus there is the mesh deformer news that ever so slowly trickled out. I splashed the update on the Deformer Project here in Mesh Deformer Update. Plus there is lots shaking in the background. Whatever, the latest on mesh follows.

CTS-694

CTS-694Missmatch of LOD meshes in multi object upload (linkset) yield viewer crash. This is supposedly fixed… sort of. I’m unclear.

A symptom of the problem is if you make a chair and table and export them as a single object. The Viewer’s uploader was mixing up the textures. It is… was a problem with how the viewer reads the Collada file and assigns the textures. If I understand correctly there is a fix so we can upload and fix textures after upload. I’m guessing a following fix will get the textures to match up with the model parts correctly.

Folders For My Outfits

Today talking in the Singularity Group the subject of My Outfits in Appearance came up. As any well dressed avatar knows the My Outfits is a big step forward. It allows mixing and matching outfits using No-Copy items. This is great and my reason for using My Outfits in Appearance.

The problem we quickly run into is we cannot organize My Outfits. Well… we can and we can’t. I’ll explain.

We can look into the My Outfits folder two different ways. If you open your inventory and open My Outfits, you can create folders and organize things. So in My Inventory/My Outfits I have a subfolder named Asian, giving me: My Inventory/My Outfits/Asian.

I have my cheongsams other Asian style dresses in that folder, easy organization. I can even drag the folders out of My Outfits and put them in say, My Inventory/Clothes/Dresses. All seems to work well.

Mesh Deformer Update

Maxwell Graf has just posted an update on the Mesh Deformer project site: Mesh Clothing Parametric Deformer Project.

Update on the mesh deformer project, 11/11/11:

Karl has begun working on the code and was contacted recently by LL in order to facilitate development of this feature. He will be working directly with LL from this point forward to supply them with code as the project moves forward, allowing them to check the feature with compatibility for the official LL releases as he progresses so that when it is done it can quickly and easily be included without weeks of additional testing. They contacted him directly to expedite the process and work together from the start of this, which means it will be working correctly and will make it a lot easier for TPV’s and other grids to implement once it is done!

This is great news and in addition to the comment Charlar made about further development with open source features is indicative of some serious new possibilities for development. Kudos to LL and Karl for being able to come to the table together for the good of the SL community. This is a best case scenario for this project, and indicates a strong willingness on LL’s part to adopt and implement this new feature that we have wanted since July.

Second Life Inventory Beta Tests

Yesterday in the Server User Group Jenn Linden attended to request help with testing coming inventory changes. These tests are in progress now on the ADITI grid. This set of changes is about speed and reliability. This set of changes is not part of the Direct Delivery (DD)feature. It is expected to improve DD’s performance too, but the change is for improved speed and reliability.

Want to Help and Test?

The code for the change is deployed on the ADITI grid. Instructions for the test can be found in the SL Wiki. See Inventory Beta Tests. The page includes the regions names of the areas using the new inventory code.

It helps if you take someone with you to test or make a friend while there. Part of the test is about giving inventory items to others and receiving items from others.

There is also an odd step where you are asked to: Remove an attachment such that it tries but cannot rez and must be returned. That could have been worded better. It sounds a bit over educated. Basically, you need to DROP and attachment in a no-rez area. Oskar Linden set up some no-rez areas in the test regions for that part of the test. Pay attention to parcel names within the regions.

#SL Viewer Update Week 45

The main viewer has moved up to version 3.2.0-244443. The Beta viewer is now up to 3.2.1-244666 (someone have a sense of humor?) And today the Snowstorm Development viewer is at 3.2.3-244722. I mostly use the Development viewer. So, I’m always unsure what the main viewer is doing or what is or is not included in it. I’ll explain what the viewers are and where you can get them and what other Linden Lab viewers are available.

Other Viewers

The three SL Viewers listed above are the primary viewers in use by residents, excluding third party viewers. But, they are not the only Linden Lab viewers available. The above viewers are available from the main Second Life Download page. Under More Viewers (More or Alternate Second Life Viewers) is a link to the Wiki page listing the other SL Viewers and Third Party Viewers (TPV.)
