Second Life: Interesting Forum Bits

As I learn my way around this new forum I am discovering odd little bits here and there.

Avatar History

Did you know there is an Second Life Avatar Vanity thread? It started in early 2011 and is 305 pages long today. It is an interesting collection of avatar pictures over the years.

2011 Avatars

Looking at the thread you’ll find the forum only allows you to jump ahead 6 pages at a time. To jump more you have to tweak the URL. Look for or add the text: /?page=300 to jump to page 300 – Oct 2014 or change the page number to whatever.

You can kinda guesstimate the year knowing it starts in 2011 and runs to July 2015 on page 305. People will be adding to it now that the new forum has exposed it anew. There are no 2016 images. But a new 2017 image has been added. I expect more.

I do notice that ALM makes what I consider a significant difference in the appearance of the avatars. With ALM off, they look a bit flat and old style. With Ambient Occlusion disabled it is worse.

Walking Dead Posts

No… not the zombie world Walking Dead show… The new forum has resurrected old… really old… threads. It seems they pulled the content from the archive into this new forum. The previous to last forum was moved into an archive. Now it looks to me like all three generations of forums have their content combined.

2015 Avatars

The default sort is Recently Updated. I am not sure why so many old posts appear on the page when sorted by Recently Updated. But, once seen an updated… they are there until you read them or mark them read.

You have the choice of; Recently Updated, Last Reply, Title, Start Date, Most Viewed, Most Replies, and Custom.

Of course, with these sorts you can see what you want.

In the Custom sort, you get more choices; Name of Last Poster and Name of Topic Starter. There are three other criteria you can add. So, finding things should be easy.

SL in Borderless Window

There are some interesting technical posts that now show in the forum. One is about running SL in a borderless window. Apparently, it is a thing for those running two screens. See: SL in Borderless Window.

Places Pages

The Lab is trying out an idea called Places Pages. It is in beta. See: Place Pages. An example is here: The Pen. I’m not enamored with the idea. But, some may find it useful.

You can discuss the feature in the forum: Check out the Place Pages Beta!

In the top and bottom bar of the thread is a small triangle button beside the page counter (Page 1 of 305 ▼). Click on the triangle an type the page number you want to go.
