More Info on SL Mesh Clothes

Hamlet has a good article by Iris Ophelia on the advantages and disadvantages of mesh clothing. See: Ophelia’s Gaze: 3 Great SL Fashion Items Which Show Off the Potential — and Limitations — of Mesh. I’ve tried to get the concepts of how mesh clothes will work out. But, Iris’s explain may make more sense … Read more

#SL Server Update Week 34

Mesh

This week mesh made it to main grid and is officially rolled out. With the exception of regions in the Blue Steel Release Channel mesh is enabled in all regions.

Oskar Linden said,

You all already know what went live this week. Mesh! There were times I wondered if it would ever ship. We started that in late 2009. I’m not saying the release is without issues, but getting it out there has been a big step. Now we can work on polishing it. We already have a phase 2 in the works with fixes and updates.[We’re] not sure the date for that but Septemberish.

Large Prims

Along with mesh comes large prims. All our prims can now be sized to 64m in X, Y, and Z directions. The only restriction for this is your viewer. Older viewers may be hard coded to the 10m limit. Using those viewers you will NOT be able to make a prim larger than 10m. Viewers used in OpenSim, like Phoenix and Imprudence, have the options to allow limits to be overridden.

SL Crash on Start

Well... not this bad. Image by: Dr.-Gianluigi-Zanettini on Flickr

Many people are having issues with the SL Viewer crashing. Problems started showing up in the 2.8 versions. For many the crash was at viewer launch or just after login. There are various causes depending on the viewer version and the video driver make and version in use. Newer video cards and drivers are more likely to have a problem. So, it is hard to know the cause of anyone person’s problems. However, the Lindens are fixing problems and things are improving.

Mesh Clothes and Stuff

I’ve always thought males in Second Life look way to gay. A bare chest and jeans is about as macho as they get. Now that mesh clothes are here I think that will change. I found a YouTube video that shows what is possible.

He is not the cutest guy I’ve seen nor is the suit an Armani. But it is a huge improvement over the typical skin tight suit worn in SL until now. I have hopes for more masculine looking guys.

#SL Scripting Update Week 34

The Scripting Maintenance Release rolled to the main grid last week. Kelly Linden tells us the release is doing well. See #SL Scripting Update Week 33 for the details of that release.

Now that the Scripting Release is out Kelly is finishing up any tweaks to it and preparing to move on to Server Maintenance. There are some glitches to fix but all does seem to be going well.

PRIM_LINK_TARGET

This is not working as expected when used in any prim other than the root prim. I think the JIRA is SCR-162.

Repeating Parameters

When one uses llSetPrimParams() there are a number of parameters that have to be used with each call using PRIM_LINK_TARGET or the call fails. This can get repetitively tedious. While it would be nice to have the function only change the values used, Kelly thinks adding that feature would get complex. Plan to be repeating the parameters for some time to come.
