#SL News Update Week 14

There are some interesting news making it out. Server updates are flowing again. That logjam seems to have broken up. Development Viewer updates are flowing. I think the later is more a matter of the download ‘latest’ link being fixed.

Viewers

I’ve gotten hooked on using the Dev Viewer releases. The current stable viewer is 3.3.0 (251182). The current Beta version is 3.3.1 (252229). The current Dev version is 3.3.2 (252822).

Strange Avatars

The last 2 or 3 releases of the Dev Viewer have been crashing on exit. That seems to be less of a problem with this version.

SH-2908 Fix for incompatibility issue with GLSL 1.30 – I think this fix is in the latest Dev Viewer.

Avastar Rigging and Animation

You may notice some of the newer animations in Second Life are getting better. There is motion capture to thank for some measure of improvement. Another contributor to the improvement is Avastar, a for purchase add-on to Blender.

One of the other handy features of Avastar is the ability to handle rigging a mesh. So, clothes makers and those making other objects rigged to the avatar will find Avastar a handy tool. I think this video gives one a good example of what it can do.

Second Life news Week 14

There are some interesting bits of information coming out. I have some here from the Content and Mesh UG.

Sketchup

This is Google’s famous tool for building 3D models. It has a low learning curve and quite a bit of ability. Using it came up in the Content and Mesh Meeting Monday.

Content/Mesh Meeting

It seems people are building things using Sketchup and bringing them into Second Life. All works well until they UNLINK them. A 100 prim Land Impact can jump to 500 prims. The reason is Sketchup makes a model as lots of small parts. When one unlinks the parts all the less than 1 prim costs that were being added together while linked, have nothing to add up with and thus round up to 1. The round up kills the prim savings.

Direct Delivery JIRA List

When filing JIRA’s one wants to be sure they are not filing a duplicate issue. That is not an easy thing to determine. Sassy Romano has made it easier for those with Direct Delivery problems.

One of the good things about checking for duplicates is one often finds the current work around methods or even fixes for the problem. So, check them out.

Direct Delivery Fix

I came across Darrius Gothly explaining to someone how to get stuck items out of the Unassociated Items List. I think that info is handy to know, so I’m publishing it here.

The problem is seen when you move a Market Place item from your Magic Box to Direct Delivery using the Merchant’s Outbox. The previous item from the Magic Box is moved to the Unassociated Items List. If you just delete it, it will come back… again ad again. If you delete from the Magic Box and the list, it will still come back again and again. They seem impossible to remove. Darrius has a fix:
