Second Life Updates 2010-10-12

Server Release Candidates

Things are happening. I’ve covered most of them in other posts. This one is a general update.

Once again there is no server update to roll to the grid. The Release Candidates in testing in Blue Steel and Le Tigre did not survive 6 days of testing. The fixes in the RC have been ‘fixed’ and new fixes added and rolled out to Blue Steel regions. The TMalloc build is being fixed and returned to Le Tigre for more testing.

Updated: See new problem with mesh enabled viewers: Can’t Login Second Life

Updated 1/2012: New code in the release channels is causing login issues, basic ghosting where the system thinks you are already logged in. The official fix is call support. I suggest you read on for steps you can take.

Original October 2010 Article

Due to a timing issue in the region software we are seeing people fail to properly log out. The result is they leave a ghost behind, not a particle ball, more the spooky kind of ghost we expect to see for Halloween. I’ve seen lots of people making this complaint recently. The Beta Server and QA teams are aware of the problem and they are chasing it down.

The problem results in one’s avatar being left behind somewhere in-world when you logout. It causes a user to show in the system as already logged on, thus preventing them from logging into Second Life.

Over time I’ve decided this is not a viewer problem, at least not a specific viewer. It does not seem to matter which viewer one uses. A poor Internet connection greatly increases your chances of experiencing the problem.

Second Life Open Beta Mesh Information

Second Life Meshes
Blender Mesh

I could not make the Office Hours Meeting Thursday to hear the discussion on the coming Open Beta on Collada Meshes. I went through the transcript today. I’m excited. Here are the highlights.

Clothes

It will be possible to make mesh clothes that move with the avatar. One will attach the mesh to the avatar skeleton. You’ll hear the skeleton referred to as an armature and attaching mesh to it referred to as rigging.

Another Viewpoint on Microsoft Linden Lab

New World notes did a quick blurb on articles about the Microsoft Buyout Rumor of Linden Lab – Second Life. See: Second Life Bloggers Blogging About Linden Lab. One of those articles is by Dusan Writer in which Dusan writes an imagined conversation between Phillip Rosedale, Linden Lab’s CEO, and investors.

Prior to the imagined conversation Dusan explains the thinking that frames the conversation. Dusan’s thinking fits with my thoughts on what fits with RL probabilities of what is happening. I suspect the conversation is more on point than many other suppositions. Check it out here: WHY LINDEN LAB IS NOT FOR SALE (YET)

Blue Steel and Le Tiger Release Channels (RC) were both running the same RC last week. They had problems and are going into another round of testing with new fixes applied. However, Le Tiger is getting a different RC for testing. This is the first time the channels have had different candidates. This is sort of building the pipeline and then filling it.
