Using Audacity

Audacity
Audacity Interface

Audacity is a free sound editing tool for Windows or as technically known a Digital Audio Editor. It is great for making sound clips for import to Second Life. If you are doing voice, there are some basic tips one should know for handling voice. I’m no expert but I have learned a few things using it.

The program as well as a number of others, twenty-four actually, are listed here: 25 Free Digital Audio Editors. Audacity is the editor of choice for Second Life types. There are in-game classes by various groups.

What Makes Virtual Worlds Successful

Enacharys_002
Enacharys in Second Life - Puzzle Game

Many game fans are considering whether they can build a game better than the one they are playing. They are looking ahead and trying to work out what will make their game viable and entertaining enough to survive. James Portnow has written a blog post titled Designing a Single Sever MMORPG at GameSetWatch.com discussing what is need to make MMORPG’s successful. JWPlatt founder of OpenUru.org posted about it in a post in that forum. I’ve been looking at RPG’s and MMO’s to find the differences between successful and not so successful RPG’s.

One of the things important to MMO’s that is so basic to Mr. Portnow that it is not even directly mentioned as a requirement in his lists is player population… concurrent participation. He goes directly to population density, game area per player.

EderGira_015
Eder Gira - Myst Uru Replication

The Myst iPhone game has brought many new people into Myst-Uru fan community. Yay! One of the things many of them are asking for is news of what is going on in the community. What are people doing, what is Cyan doing, are there sequels coming for the iPhone, who is doing what and how do I help. The Guild of Messengers (GoMe) is the publisher of all information Myst-Uru related and they have just published this month’s issue. But, it appears Myst is developing a generation gap in fan communications.

Second Life Vampires

Dharma_004
LoN Fest 2009

Yeah, yeah… not the Bloodlines kind… the Role Play kind, not that Bloodlines doesn’t RP. I’m just writing about a broader group. In several of Second Life’s role play communities vampires are a major part of the role play. Advanced role players often like a back story to fill out their character. So, playing in Second Life’s various role play games one is likely to meet vampires with wonderfully written character histories. In combat RPG’s (Role Playing Games) it is important to understand the relationships these histories imply. It can keep your character alive. I’m not a big vampire fan. I’m more into the Kate Beckinsale  and Hugh Jackman type Van Helsing side of things. But one must know their enemies.

Myst Series Explained for iPhone Users

Cyan-iPhone Web Site
New Myst iPhone Web Site

Earlier I wrote “Myst-Uru-SL and the iPhone” and wondered whether the Myst-Uru fans and Cyan would make a place for iPhone users on the Myst Online forum. They did and with some fan effort to create a boat load of in-bound links iPhone users are finding the forum and joining up, more than tripling enrollments. Fans are answering questions and finding work-arounds to minor problems in the Myst iPhone app/game. In the process some interesting questions have come up that show the value of mixing the new and old fans.

The New Myst Style Devokan

Second Life fans are discovering the Myst-Uru community within the grid. When Myst Online: Uru Live, a GameTap revived version of the game Uru Live, closed about 500 fans made it to SL. The more well known SL group is the D’ni Refugees. The Refugees are working in smaller groups to learn building and build new Myst-Uru style builds with puzzles and storylines. These have resulted in the opening of new regions. Now there is another region opening made by members of one of the ‘guilds’ from Uru.

Myst-Uru-SL and the iPhone

D'ni Refugess
Second Life Myst Fans

Many in the Myst-Uru community are thrilled that Cyan Worlds, Inc. (original creators of the Myst series) has ported the original Myst to the iPhone (7 minute trailer there). The active fans are now supporters and buying the App for their iPod Touch or iPhone (As I write this Myst iPhone App is forth in the Apps Store Games Section). They are also supporters of the open source development of Myst Online or Uru. But will fans take advantage of the opportunity the iPhone is giving them?
