Thanks for your feedback on Solve Media’s Captcha widget.
In the last 24 hours I’ve gone from the escalating 1,000+ spams per day for the last few days to 74.

Recently I’ve had periods where my computer or Internet connection seems to bog down. I started looking to see what was happening and found I had a security problem. So, if you use Remote Desktop or have your Windows Login Service exposed to the Internet for other reasons, you should probably read this.

I’ve heard the news and seen the articles on the Cyber War. I have my firewall and anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-etc… So, I feel pretty safe. But, I do use Windows Firewall in Vista. It is a decent enough firewall even if many do knock it.
But, I kept having periods where my computer got sluggish. Also, recently my Internet connection speed would shift into s l o o o o w motion. So, I started looking to see what was happening.
The Lab has a ‘Second Life LIMITS’ page in the wiki. It is a handy reference for a number of things. I missed that in December 2012 the page was getting revisions and has been for a time. The page has had a number of updates and new information added.

This is a page editable by the community. In December Perrie Juran made some changes. In November Ibrew Meads, Kireji Haiku, Darien Caldwell, Uccello Poultry, and Stickman Ingmann were making changes. If you look through the page’s history there are some well known names contributing to the Wiki.
I am trying out the Solve Media Captcha on my comments to see if it can block some of the spam flooding the site. Yesterday over 1,000 spams were in the cue and that was with several hundred blocked by Bad Behavior.
Please post a comment to this post to see how it works. Let me know if it is better or worse than other captchas you have used.
In general I don’t like the illegible captcha tools used by most sites. Solve Media supplies a readable captcha puzzle. They also sell advertising through the captcha widget/plugin. Getting money is always nice.
A new version of the Development Viewer came out yesterday: 3.4.6 (269073) Jan 15 2013. I figured this would be a good viewer to use for testing the Interest List improvements running in Blue Steel and Le Tigre RC channels. It is an interesting change.
To try the Interest List you need to find a shop in an RC region (Second Life RC LeTigre 13.01.04.268719). I tried:
Then I compared to a standard region in the main channel without the Interest List improvements.
I find it interesting that this viewer is running at 15 to 75 FPS and probably averaging in the 30 to 40 FPS range. It did that in all three regions. I’m running one setting under ULTRA with Draw Distance at 128m.
Tuesday things were borked. I got into Second Life™ and then could not teleport to Denby for the User Group meeting. My LM did not work. I tried to open the world map to teleport to a neighboring region. The map would not show Denby, the region with the Server-Scripting meeting. I tried the Destination Guide on the web site to get neighboring region names. It too could not find Denby.

I tried relogging. But then, I could not log back in. Grid Status finally popped up that there was a problem. Really!?! And I gave up trying to login. Later in the day SL was working and I could login.
