Second Life News 2016 w45

The Deploys thread did not update until late Tuesday. It usually updates late Monday or early Tuesday. Caleb Linden has been writing the updates for the last few months. I would guess this is not his favorite task.

So, the late posting and the election results diverted me away from getting my Tuesday SL News article published.

Oz Linden was saying on last Friday that one more bug fix coming for the RC Second Life Bento Viewer version 5.0.0.321250. Then it will be a candidate for release as the main viewer. This means we will very likely have Project Bento this year and may be before Thanksgiving.

RC Second Life Maintenance Viewer version 4.1.2.321183 is doing well. It could and likely will release before the Bento viewer.

While the order of release is not clear, inside or outside the Lab, the Lindens do expect one to release before Thanksgiving, in a couple of week and the other will become the default a couple weeks after first of December.

Second Life: How to USE SL 360 Images

Oh my… what a mess. The current state of the Linden 360-viewer is for the geeky only. The instructions for setting up to display these images, via web or just on your local computer, is described in a Bitbucket thread: JS 360-snapshot-web-viewer and the SL Wiki.

No problem. Just install Python and set up a simple web server… As Ebbe has said, “Who the f**k installs servers?”

The instructions on both the sites assume you know about web servers and tech. But, all the needed parts are in Bitbucket.

Second Life gets a 360 Camera

Yesterday I published my update on the servers and viewers. Monday Inara published hers. Today the Lab announces a new Project Viewer: Second Life Project 360 Snapshot Viewer version 4.1.2.320965. The release notes are here. Download.

I’ve written about this feature coming. Now it is here, almost.

The release notes describe the project as:

The existing viewer snapshot system (control-shift-s) is being extended to add a mode where you can take a picture that encompasses all directions at once.

Placed in a suitable web site with some HTML and JavaScript, the image can then be scrolled to look around as though you had a window into Second Life at the moment the picture was taken. Please visit our wiki for details

This is also integrated with a number of other Snapshot improvements contributed by the author of the Black Dragon viewer.

The SL Blog announcement is here: A New Perspective on Second Life.
