Second Life News 2013-14 #2

The server updates seem to have gone pretty well. There are some good things and some bad things.

Region crossings are way better. A couple of sailors and pilots have commented in the Deploys thread about how much better things are.

With this rollout the problem of some items simply not rendering has gotten worse. If one clicks on them they show up. So, the server has told the viewer they are there. But, for some reason the viewer is not rendering them. It seems the problem is showing up in Linden and third party viewers.  Continue reading

Second Life News 2013-14

We are a little light on news in Second Life™. The server updates are toward the end. I think to some extent things are hung up with CHUI – Chat Hub User Interface. There are some problems in the code. The Lindens are thinking one more Beta version of the CHUI Viewer is going to be needed before they can complete it. I suspect we will see that this week.

They have been fixing things;

  • CHUI-799 FIXED Notification is not given to user when they select only friends and groups can IM me
  • CHUI-855 FIXED Text entry bar auto expand does not resize
  • CHUI-896 FIXED Line flashing and FUI button flashing not working correctly for CHUI notifications
  • CHUI-903 FIXED Don’t show toasts if Session floater is torn-off and in focus.
  • CHUI-905 Fixed Viewer crashes while using Insert keyboard key in chat

They are behind in fixes. Plus a number of problems related to CHUI are not being reported in CHUIBUG. They are being reported in other areas, like the general BUG section.

Second Life News 2013-13

This week we did get a rollout to the main channel. The code running on Blue Steal and Le Tigre was promoted Tuesday morning.  This is a package that has a bug fix or two and a crash mode fix, which I think is mostly a security fix. So, we won’t see much change in the main channel… may be a bit less griefing.

Release Channels

Wednesday we will see the Blue Steal and Le Tigre RC channels get the exciting rollout. SVC-3755 is included which changes how the CHANGED() event works. Now CHANGED_REGION and CHANGED_TELEPORT will work from child prims.

Region Crossing Update – Video

An avatar named ‘16’ made a video showing her testing of the fixes now running in the Magnum RC channel.

[youtube xgwtXk9lCsc]

The video runs 2:40 minutes. In it you can see what I’ll call perfect crossings and messed up crossings. When one can cross and turn it shows the system is working. Without comments in the video we cannot tell when she crossed and lost control, at least I can’t – not for sure. I think the camera jerks are from problems with the crossing.

Whatever the case, things seem to be working pretty well for these ‘fast’ crossings.

Second Life Vehicle Crossings

If you build or use vehicles you know they have been having region crossing problems. According to reports in the SL Forum things are much better in Magnum regions.

Andrew Linden explains what they found and worked to fix, “The problem was caused by the new Interest List code which tries to not subscribe to objects that are outside of the camera view.  When crossing a region boundary your viewer would extrapolate your camera forward, the vehicle would be created behind the camera, and the server would not subscribe to it.  The faster the vehicle the more likely this would happen.

The solution was to special case Interest List subscription to whatever you’re sitting on — the server now ALWAYS subscribes to your seat.  We already had some special case code for seats, but it needed a little more.

HTTP Concerns

My readers know the HTTP aspects of Second Life™ are being upgraded to the latest and greatest tech available for HTTP. For most of us this is a non-issue we hope will give us better overall performance; faster texture download, more stable connections, and world that renders quickly.

For others this is a matter of their in-world systems, think vending machines and subscription machines, working or not. If you use vending machines or other tools that depend on a third party server, you should be checking with the creator to see if they are testing their products with the new HTTP protocol services.  Continue reading

Second Life News 2013-12

This week a new package rolled to the main channel from the Magnum RC channel. As of noon today the crash or scream rate was low enough the Lindens were happy. That doesn’t mean everyone is happy. We still have major crossing problems with mesh vehicles.

This was too funny not to use.

This was too funny not to use.

While we just got a fix for the BUG-1814 – Fix for ‘No object updates from vehicles after some region crossings’ the problem of vehicles crossing is not resolved. This fix is for the case where a vehicle appears to get stuck at the crossing. The fix for vehicles failing to cross, or at least the camera failing, is supposed to be in the RC release to roll out to Magnum tomorrow, Wednesday.

Second Life News 2013-11 #3

The Beta Server meeting this Thursday was definitely attended by more Lindens than I’ve ever seen in any one place.

  1. Baker Linden
  2. Caleb Linden
  3. Dan Linden
  4. Don Linden
  5. Kelly Linden
  6. Kurt Linden
  7. Log Linden
  8. Maestro Linden
  9. Nyx Linden
  10. Simon Linden

That is a pretty big list of Lindens.

Maestro covered the server rollouts for the week. No surprises there. But we did get a bit of information on a couple of the fixes in the Magnum RC channel.
