Second Life Teen Grid

The teen grid closes at the end of this year. Today Terrence Linden posted in Welcoming Teen Grid Organizations to the Main Grid that 13 to 17 year olds will be allowed on the main grid. Previously they planned to allow 16 to 17 year olds on the main grid. The change today is the Lab will allow 13 to 15 year olds into regions owned by approved organizations. Current teen organizations will continue to operate past the end of the year without interruption.

Server Update 2010-09-28

I am surprised but today (6 AM SLT – Tuesday) they are rolling out the new server software with TCMalloc, the new memory allocator. I was not expecting this for another week or two. Apparently TCMalloc is the big change in this version. It will be interesting to see if this improves regions crossing and reduces Mono script rez problems.

The release notes are short. They don’t really tell us much… several crash modes and they don’t even mention TCMalloc. If you read them, the Conductor they mention is the watch dog that finds regions that need to be restarted and assigns regions to various servers. More work has been done on it.

There is also the Rollout System or deployment tools. Imaging copying new software to thousands of computers and updating settings. Getting this working well makes rollouts go faster and will allow rollouts to be moved to early mornings.

Will be an interesting day in SL.

Dolphin Viewer 1.5.0.3627 Review

Dolphin Viewer
Dolphin Viewer Logo

On the 21st the Dolphin Viewer made the Third Party Viewer (TPV) List. Congrats. So, it is probably time to take a look at this viewer.

I like blue colors so I think the web site is pretty, Dolphin Viewer Web Site/Blog. Bug reports are to be made in the Dolphin Viewer Forum. The forum is new, so there is not much there. The Dolphin Viewer Download page has instructions for installation; it’s different so pay attention. Linux, Mac, and Windows versions are available. Source code is available; links are on the download page.

Warning: The developer can’t test Mac versions. So, you may find problems in the Mac version that are not visible to the developer. Your feedback would be helpful, if you’re into helping.

In the viewer’s ToS is the information that the Dolphin Viewer is based on Henri Beauchamp’s “Cool VL Viewer” and ported to the Snowglobe 1.4 code base. That makes this a Second Life Viewer 1 (SLV1) series viewer. Some of the dialogs still refer to the viewer as Snowglobe.

Second Life Server Updates

OpenSim
OpenSim Console

Here is the latest I’ve found on what is going on with server updates. This spreads over the last 3 weeks.

Estate Console

The Server QA Team is looking at ways to give estate managers more control, like may be a command line type console to avoid time needed to develop a user interface, if the team can work out some problems. As a possibility, I think, it looks good. But, it may never happen.

Second Life Viewer 2.1.1 Review

Second Life Viewer
Second Life 2.2.0

Yesterday I tried using the Second Life Viewer. I had to down load a new version, which shows on the download page as Second Life 2.1.1 (208043). It has been around for a little while, I’m just seeing it now. I usually use the Development Viewer. Today I see the Release notes in the Wiki being updated for Development (Beta) Viewer 2.2.0, the one I normally use. See: Release Notes/Second Life Beta Viewer/2.2.0

If you think it odd that I look at the Release Notes for Development Viewer 2.2.0 for the new Main Viewer 2.1.1 then consider. The bugs fixed in 2.2.0 are still alive and well in 2.1.1…
