SL Crash on Start

Well... not this bad. Image by: Dr.-Gianluigi-Zanettini on Flickr

Many people are having issues with the SL Viewer crashing. Problems started showing up in the 2.8 versions. For many the crash was at viewer launch or just after login. There are various causes depending on the viewer version and the video driver make and version in use. Newer video cards and drivers are more likely to have a problem. So, it is hard to know the cause of anyone person’s problems. However, the Lindens are fixing problems and things are improving.

Mesh Clothes and Stuff

I’ve always thought males in Second Life look way to gay. A bare chest and jeans is about as macho as they get. Now that mesh clothes are here I think that will change. I found a YouTube video that shows what is possible.

He is not the cutest guy I’ve seen nor is the suit an Armani. But it is a huge improvement over the typical skin tight suit worn in SL until now. I have hopes for more masculine looking guys.

#SL Scripting Update Week 34

The Scripting Maintenance Release rolled to the main grid last week. Kelly Linden tells us the release is doing well. See #SL Scripting Update Week 33 for the details of that release.

Now that the Scripting Release is out Kelly is finishing up any tweaks to it and preparing to move on to Server Maintenance. There are some glitches to fix but all does seem to be going well.

PRIM_LINK_TARGET

This is not working as expected when used in any prim other than the root prim. I think the JIRA is SCR-162.

Repeating Parameters

When one uses llSetPrimParams() there are a number of parameters that have to be used with each call using PRIM_LINK_TARGET or the call fails. This can get repetitively tedious. While it would be nice to have the function only change the values used, Kelly thinks adding that feature would get complex. Plan to be repeating the parameters for some time to come.

About Second Life…

One of my favorite Second Life bloggers is Gwyneth Llewelyn. Her posts are infrequent, but they do cover a subject in depth. She has a new article up: Innovation, yes, but wrong turn. One can learn a lot about Second life from the article.

Gwyneth’s viewpoints are usually a fresh look at Second Life and the directions taken by Linden Lab. In this article she lays out a new perspective, basically calling a spade a spade. In her viewpoint Second Life is a niche product/service and she makes a good argument for her point of view. She also makes good points for what can be done with a niche market.

The four page article is worth the read.

#SL Mesh Update Week 34

This week Mesh and Sever updates are intertwined. Mesh has rolled out to the main grid, at least the mesh code has. I have yet to find where anyone has officially said mesh is enabled in all regions. I suspect it may be enabled grid wide. It is enabled in the region where my cottage is, which is a mainland region.

There is no Featured News item about it in the SL Blog. No mesh update in the Tools and Technology section. I assume they are giving it some time to see how the full grid handles mesh before making a splash. But, it looks like mesh is finally here.
