Interesting Things Week 36

I’m not much on writing about places in Second Life™. I leave that to Honour McMillan as she does it so well. There is the place I find ever so often that I want to say something about and then I write something. It is the same with fashion.

From ICON Magazine – September Issue

For them writing about technical stuff is obviously not the joy of their day. They do mention techy things, like Honour mentioning the tiling bug, which I’ve never seen. But, I seldom capture hi-rez images. I suppose that is why. I can’t find a JIRA for it either. Oh well, something else to watch for. Continue reading

Do #SL Mesh Clothes Fit

If you have not read: #SL Mesh Deformer Debate Update now would be a good time.

We have an estimate for the cost of getting the computer code written for a Multiple Base Shape Deformer. We have some of the money pledges and only need to raise less than US$1,000. Our problem is convincing the Lindens it is needed and wanted.

There is some discussion ongoing in several places. But, check out SLUniverse where I wrote:

#SL Crusade for Good Looks

Several things are coming together and I think we are at the beginning of user driven change to Avatar 2.0. I just updated my tutorial for getting started making mesh clothes: Second Life Mesh Clothes Blender 2.6 Setup 2012 Tutorial. So, we need to be considering what it is that makes our avatar look nice, which inspired this article.

Penny Patton's Proportioned Shapes

Crusade

Some time ago I saw an article by Penny Patton on adjusting camera position for a better Second Life®. See the SL Forum and her article: A Matter of Perspective. It makes an amazing difference in how one sees Second Life. That inspired my article: Second Life Camera Position Tips.

There are tradeoffs between how one sets the camera for walking and sitting. The Second Life default camera position is a compromise between good settings for walking and sitting. Neither is ideal. It would be great if the camera would just change location when we sit or stand.

All that camera position stuff is nice, but what we have to look at is more of a problem than how we look at it. Penny’s current two articles are about making a better looking Second Life. Check out the article: Beautiful Second Life. This article focuses on what is and what can be. It is an excellent comparison.

#SL Mesh Defomer at Risk

Scanning the Second Life® news today I found an article on new World Notes by Hamlet about Oz Linden reconsidering whether the Mesh Defmer is worth the effort… the bother to add it to Second Life. Hamlet’s article is: Linden Lab Needs Mesh Samples to Test Qarl’s Mesh Deformer — Or May Not Incorporate It Into SL Viewers At All.

If you don’t know the Mesh Deformer or the Parametric Deformer is the missing part of the mesh project that was never completed. The Deformer will allow mesh clothes to change with avatar shape controls. It causes mesh clothes to follow the Enhanced Avatar Physics, the clothes bounce with the boobies. The Lindens are considering dropping the project. We need to demonstrate support for the project for it to continue. This article is about getting the support into a visible place for the Lindens to see.

I found Oz’s comments in the JIRA STORM-1716 item. Continue reading

Humor AND Dark Sex?

This article is an interview with an adult content maker in the BDSM community.

Everyone likes sex… I think. Mixing it with humor is like chocolate with cherries for me, way better. Some prefer a much darker experience. And that darker part leads me to Myrylyn Shinn and her sometimes humorous and always dark Frenemies.

Myrylyn Shinn

I’ve only done a couple of interviews from the interviewer’s side. If you are a regular reader, you know I am more into news and tech oriented. But, I need a change from time to time. I play in some dark RP games. That and my coverage of Adult Content caught Myrylyn’s attention. Her role play and toys are very dark and was curious if I would cover her creations for the adult community. So, in this interview I hope you can experience the talented and fun Myrylyn. You will see the interesting mix of her humor, dark role play, and toys in her Frenemy Fashion blog.

I want to point out this is NOT a paid promotion.

I first knew of Myrylyn when she IM’d me and asked if I wrote about adult topics in my blog. As you know, I do. I try to keep things safe for work. I do have articles about Zindra, where I live, and Adult Content. I think I’ve kept this safe for work. I’ve labeled links that lead to NSFW pages to avoid surprises.

Myrylyn IM’d me wanting to talk about and show off things she is making for the adult community. At first I’m thinking penises… which I generally find interesting. So, sure. Show me yours… I suppose meeting a woman and imagining she has a collection of penises on display somewhere is pretty much a Second Life thing… or maybe that’s just… never mind. Whatever, I had no idea what I was getting into, I teleported over to talk with her.

When I arrived, Myrylyn and her friend Thessally were building-testing a new Myrylyn toy. The ball gag may have had something to do with Thessally having little to say. As I rezzed I was wondering if I had gotten in over my head. The toy Myrylyn was building is The Frenemaker (NSFW). Yikes! A change of my mental gears was needed.

Second Life Interesting

Strawberry Singh with her fun nature does a fashion blog and a hilarious Plurk line (example she Plurked about: Brown Vag) I check both each day. She finds awesome skins and lingerie. Great photography. But today she surprised me and posted about doing a promotional piece for Linden Lab. See the image. I think it is one of the best promotional pieces for Second Life that I’ve seen.

Strawberry's Blog and Art

To see it on the Second Life site, you need to log out of the SL web sites. Then visit SecondLife.com. You may not see it as the first image. However there is a pager button in the images so you can look through the images. I have all the ones that came up for me, 5, after the fold.

#SL Outfits

I’m taking another look at the viewer’s My Outfits panel in this article. People have used it enough to have formed opinions. Also, some may have figured out efficient ways to use Outfits. But, I have yet to find anyone that is really happy with Outfits as they exist. I also expect to see Outfits change at some future date. The question is can we influence the change?

#SL Outfits - Good, Bad, or Ugly?

I have ambiguous feelings about the ‘My Outfits’ panel or more technically correct the Appearance Panel. Since I am usually in the My Outfits tab I tend to think of and call it the Outfits Panel.

I like it and have issues with it. When it first arrived there were so many other new ways to do things in Viewer 2 I put off dealing with it. When I did start looking at it, it was so awkward to use I put it off some more. Now a discussion at SLUniverse got me thinking about it again. (Reference) The result follows.
