Second Life Share – Facebook

Well, yesterday September 25, the Lab announced Second Life Share. This is the feature that allows us to easily share stuff from Second Life on Facebook. It’s an opt-in thing.

You can find the announcement here: Introducing SLShare, an Easy Way to Share to Facebook While Inworld.

Torley Linden has a new video out to show you how to use SL Share.

Torley’s pink and green is definitely muted in this video. But, I think it gives you a good idea of what the Lab is after with this feature. They are adding links to the Facebook posts so that people will be lead directly into Second Life. They will be landing on the maps page. If they are curious they will be downloading the viewer and trying to get in. Continue reading

Second Life Integrating with Facebook?

Daniel Voyager came up with information about Second Life™ adding more integration with Facebook. Daniel has apparently found some of the leaks I use to learn about what is coming to SL. From what he has found the Facebook Floater is apparently due out in viewer 3.6.6 next week. I’m not so sure it will be next week or in 3.6.6.

I just don’t think it will happen that fast, but it might. Viewer 3.6.6 is already in the viewer pipeline and you can download a copy from the Beta/Alternate Viewers page*. I’ve been using the Ribbon Viewer 3.6.6 (280938). As best I can tell this feature is not in it.  Continue reading

Second Life ToS Change

In August the Linden Lab Terms of Service for all their products changed. One change most of us missed is now a point of considerable concern.

I’ve been watching discussion of the change in ToS that explicitly states we grant Linden Lab the right to sell any content uploaded to Second Life. I am not seeing what I consider a good explanation of the situation or clear opinion on it. Inara Pey has an article that shows the EXACT change and highlights the pertinent sections. See: ToS change and content rights: Lab provides statementContinue reading

Nomine Closing

When I first came to Second Life™ it was not long until I decided I had to have a better skin. I spent months searching for one I liked that fit the look I wanted. I selected a Nomine skin. I still wear that skin.

I saw a post on SLUniverse today that Munchflower Zaius has health and cash flow issues and will be closing/selling the region housing the Nomine store.  Munchflower’s market place store should remain open to the end of the year.

Some customers that are on the Nomine subscriber are getting notices of the closing. Caete posted a copy of the notice she received in the SLUniverse forum.

Nomine Closing

🙁 I wish Munchflower the all the best and as easy a health battle as possible.

Second Life Height Offset

Third party viewer users are accustomed to have the a feature know as avatar z-offset or height offset. This feature allowed us to precisely control our avatars vertical position. Whether walking, sitting, or ground sitting we could adjust the avatar’s vertical position in relation to the ground or a floor.

The roll out of SSA broke this feature. It appears this is the thing most often asked about in various support groups since SSA rolled out. At least it is the question I see most consistently being asked. Well, that and temporary texture upload. But, temporary texture upload has been replaced with Local Textures for some time.

Today I see the Marine Kelly has an article out about a fix for Height Offset. See: RestrainedLove Viewer 2.8.5.3 with Z offset fix. Marine also explains how to use Local textures in her article.  Continue reading

More on Second Life Mesh

Loki Eliot has a post up about his experience with mesh: Materials Post Mortem. It is a good article. You can visit the region named  Escapades to see what things Loki has built.

...up stairs... at Loki Eliot Store

Loki is pointing out some of the problems when trying to build for ALM-Enabled people and ALM-Disabled people. (ALM = Advanced Lighting Model) I think it becomes clear builders are having to decide if they will build for ALM-D or ALM-E. Building for both degrades both. Continue reading

Second Life ToS Analyzed

Over on SLUniverse people are tracking down the changes in the ToS (Terms of Service) that popped up the other day.

So, far it seems to mostly be CYA clauses. There is also a reorganization of the information. Several people think this was to accommodate using the same ToS for all of Linden Lab’s™ products. Whatever the case no one has found a new deal breaker.

See: Yipes – can’t agree to TOS – The main point being several people have not been able to see the text of the ToS in the viewer’s login screen. They get the “Please Agree” window, it’s just empty, nothing to read.

Darien Caldwell has some posts in the thread pointing out some things Darien was unfamiliar with. See: post. Ayesha Lytton has an interesting post about what happens when you remove things from the grid or leave SL. See: post. Continue reading
