Second Life: Hover Adjustments

Lindal Kidd has an article up titled FLASH! Fine Hover Adjustments Return! Basically, she says Wow! Then points us to Inara’s blog where Inara has posted: Avatar Hover Height reaches release viewer. Inara is pointing out that the RC Hover Viewer version 3.7.26.299635 was promoted to the status of being the main/default viewer.

Fortunately Inara covers how to use the feature and a bit of the history leading up to it. So, I won’t be writing that up. For the TL:DR peeps the short story is: once you have the new viewer, right-click your avatar and select Hover Height. Then adjust.

I seem to remember the adjustment will only last for the secession. But, that may have changed as the last time I paid much attention was early in the development stage.

UPDATE: Oh….. the Linden announcement is here: Now Available: Hover Height Improvements.

Second Life: Next Generation Platform Update 2015

I started this series with: Second Life: Educational Community Update 2015 March. This article is about part of what I gleaned from the speech about the coming Second Life 2.0 or as the Lab calls it: The Next Generation Platform (NGP).

What’s Coming?

We haven’t heard much about what they are building into NGP for months. In his speech for VWBRE Ebbe Altberg (Linden) makes it clear that all technology being developed by the Lab is for both NGP and Second Life (SL). This doesn’t mean everything being developed for NGP is going to make it into Second Life or vice-versa. Nor does it imply how everything is implemented in Second Life will be similarly implemented in NGP. But, there are interesting clues as to what’s currently happening in both.

Firestorm Activism

As I and several others have reported, the Lab is thinking about removing the Restore to Last Position (RTLP) feature at the server level. No one really knows how many people use the feature. The Lindens only heard about use of the feature when people showed up at support wanting things back which they lost by using the feature. So, the Lab has a bad taste for RTLP. No surprise there. And they don’t build IN Second Life the way users do. So, they see no use for the feature.

But, there are possibilities for keeping the feature and eliminating the problems. Firestorm has disabled the feature for No-Copy items in there viewer. If you screw up, at least you have a copy left. Other viewers have done similar things. This is a rather simple fix.

Slink Updates 2015 Week 10

Slink hands and feet got a new update. This update changes how various appliers work with the hands and feet. This is the announcement:

-{ZOZ}- IMPORTANT UPDATE

Monday,02 Mar 2015 15:38:00 GMT

As some may know, Slink released a big update to their hands and feet. This also means that designers have also had an update. In order to use the NEW POLISH HUDS you must UPDATE YOUR HANDS AND FEET. If you have hands or feet older then this last weekend, be sure to go in and have them redelivered to you so the new polish appliers for slink hands and feet work. Yes old huds will work with the new hands. But new huds will not work with old hands. ~Zoz

Second Life Needs… What?

Shug Maitland wrote What Does Second Life Need? I like that she thinks. Now she has me thinking.

A recent article of Inara’s got Shug thinking. All signs are that SL1, our current Second Life, and what I call SL2, the new virtual world Linden Lab is building, will run simultaneously. Shug’s question is can SL1 compete with SL2? Good question.

I’ve heard and read lots of opinions. But, few include why they hold their opinion.

Shug and many of the rest of us agree we need a better avatar, Avatar 2.0. The starter avatars we have now are probably the direction the Lab will go with SL2. The skeleton, skin, and animation will likely all get better.
