Second Life Bits II Week 15

Large cyberattack was carried out via Google

This is making the news today as we find out Russian and Chinese hackers have been into and are in the White House computers. This looks to be a finger to Obama by the Russians after the President said he was making a big push for cyber security… yeah, secure this.

Google advertising pushed links to Engage Lab that used exploits in  Java, Adobe Flash Player, and Microsoft Silverlight to infect computers.

The attack lasted about 2 hours before Google detected it and shut it down.

Google Play Spy

The app Webpage Screenshot is apparently a spying program. A Swedish newspaper broke the story. Today Google is taking down the app and killing its ability to report to its master.

See: Google Chrome Extension Spying On You.

Adult SL Photography

Sex is a big part of art. And there is no exception for photographic art in Second Life. If you haven’t heard of Domino Dupre (NSFW) check out her collection of erotic imagery from Second Life on Flickr.

You’ll find her composing a regular collection of erotic imagery that is shown on The Sexiest: PornStars’ blog. (NSFW)

Windows Oculus Desktop

There is an app for that… Ben Lang writing for Road to VR has published: Latest Version of ‘Virtual Desktop’ is Here, The Free App That Makes Your Entire Windows Computer Oculus Rift-capable.

If you have an Oculus or Oculus like HMD, you can download Virtual Desktop and see what the future may look like. Get the links from within the article.

US Sanctions Hit Russian WoW Players

Would you have thought…?

Massively Overpowered is carrying a story about how US sanctions against Russia is hitting players in Crimea. See: Sanctions Force World Of Warcraft, Diablo Iii Ban In Crimea.

Second Life – NGP and Adult Content

There is what I find an odd dichotomy in how people think a virtual world should look, be, and what people actually want. The infamous Second Life ad that some saw as negative and detrimental to the popularity of Second Life probably is suggestive of the problem.

Second Life Banner Ad
Second Life Banner Ad

I know that ads like these are tracked. Google Analytics provides an extensive set of tracking tools. One can track the person from their click on the ad through the web site it sends them to. I can see what they click on while in the web site and if my site is hooked into Google Analytics I can track how many clickers actually signed up. Gotta love those tracking cookies…

The stats tell me which ads are most effective for pulling in signups. I push the most effective ads to run more often. I think it reasonable to think most advertisers do the same.

Second Life and SEX

We just saw the trashy article by Marlon McDonald that ticked off a number of Second Life™ residents. We aren’t prudes about sex. What was upsetting about the article was how poorly it was done. We have had that grip for some time and it seems to be an ongoing problem perpetuated by dysfunctional journalists and reporters that have no idea what either profession is about, even if they did go to school and major in the subject. Sad.

Inara Pey made an excellent response rebutting the lame article. Please drop by and check her article. It is here: The Strange Stories about Second Life that Totally Miss The Mark! Please leave a comment and have your friends stop by. We would like to see the blog clearly conveyed the idea that good writing draws more views than trash does.

Second Life’s Necronom VI in Video

I tried taking pictures of Necronom VI (NVI). But, the lighting is often animated, which doesn’t show up in the still images. So, Saturday I took some time to make what I think was a last visit to NVI and take some video. I’m not a machinamist… or even that experienced with FRAPS. So, I forgot to turn off the cursor for most of the video. But, I think I caught enough to show what NVI was/is like.

This video is uploaded in 720p format. That means it looks best in the default YouTube viewer or smaller, not full screen… over 1024.

Second Life Xcite!

I think Xcite! genitals are considered the Cadillac of genitals… there are so many ways to think of that… When asked today of they were changing over to fitted mesh Javier Puff answered, “We generally don’t talk about products we haven’t shipped yet, but you will notice that we’ve been moving everything in our store to mesh over time. :)” So, I suppose that is a hint in the direction of a yes answer.

Sarawak – 2014

It should be interesting to see what they do to make nipples and butts work with the new mesh avatar bodies. The new mesh bodies do respond to Avatar Physics when made properly. This means Fitted Mesh nipples could bounce with the breast, something they currently don’t do. I take off the Avatar Physics layer when I add my Xcite! parts.

Servers

This week there are no server rollouts.

I’ve seen a couple of comments about unusually intense griefing. But, I haven’t seen it happening in my travels, but SL is a big place. I know there are some places that get lots of attention from griefers. Other regions like mine seem to seldom see a griefer.

I do get noobies coming from a landing hub that get trapped in my house and can’t figure out how to get out. It is sort of like having flies in the house… they fly around bumping into the walls.
