Second Life Development Viewer 3.4.6 Released

by

A new version of the Development Viewer came out yesterday: 3.4.6 (269073) Jan 15 2013. I figured this would be a good viewer to use for testing the Interest List improvements running in Blue Steel and Le Tigre RC channels. It is an interesting change.

To try the Interest List you need to find a shop in an RC region (Second Life RC LeTigre 13.01.04.268719). I tried:

  • Farstone – Prim build shop.
  • Mayfair – An all Mesh build region with mesh clothes shops.

Then I compared to a standard region in the main channel without the Interest List improvements.

  • Heels – The N-core shop – A prim build.

I find it interesting that this viewer is running at 15 to 75 FPS and probably averaging in the 30 to 40 FPS range. It did that in all three regions. I’m running one setting under ULTRA with Draw Distance at 128m.

Second Life News 2013-3

Tuesday things were borked. I got into Second Life™ and then could not teleport to Denby for the User Group meeting. My LM did not work. I tried to open the world map to teleport to a neighboring region. The map would not show Denby, the region with the Server-Scripting meeting. I tried the Destination Guide on the web site to get neighboring region names. It too could not find Denby.

I tried relogging. But then, I could not log back in. Grid Status finally popped up that there was a problem.  Really!?! And I gave up trying to login. Later in the day SL was working and I could login.

Bad Behavior

by

I’ve added the plugin Bad Behavior to this blog. I’ve seen a large up tic in spam. Not much makes it through to the comments list where I approve comments. But, the number flowing into the Spam List increased by a factor of about 10.

So, in an effort to keep the database a bit cleaner and faster, I added Bad Behavior. I’ll be watching it over the next few days to see how it works.

Let me know if it creates a problem for you when you attempt to post a comment.

Update: Apparently ‘Bad Behavior’ blocks OpenID. That should not block your comments on this site.

Mesh Building 2013-3

Drongle McMahon is into mesh and does lots of experimenting. When I see his posts in the SL Forum I usually check them out to see what he has to say. I learn a bunch. The more I learn the more I cut from the cost of my mesh objects. So, while this article may get geeky it can save you Lindens.

Recently he has been seeing oddities in the physics model’s cost affect on items using prim type physics, which you may need to use for some objects like walls with doors. There is a thread titled: Triangle physics weight – Cautionary tales, episode 2.

His post points out some problems with physics models and how one of his went from a Land Impact (LI) of 7,671 to 0.5… why is worth knowing and understanding.

Metareality Summary 2013-2

As I mentioned yesterday, it has been weeks since the podcast. Gianna mentions that in the opening post. Lots happening in her life; hurricanes, holidays, and work. Whatever, we have a new podcast titled ‘Duh’ and I got to listen to it this morning.

As usual I don’t quote or transcribe the podcast. I write my take of what I hear. So, be smart, listen to the podcast before you react to anything.
