Windows 10 is Here

If you are running Windows 7 or 8 you are likely getting popups telling you can upgrade to Windows 10. It was released this month, August. Personally I’m waiting to update my office machine. I am assuming my Adobe products that just updated to CC 15.1 will work well with Win 10. But, just in case…

WINDOWS 10

I’ll be changing my Win 8.1 laptop this week. I’ll play with Win 10 on it and see how that goes. I don’t use the laptop often and should probably sell it. But, it can serve as a guinea pig for Win 10.  Continue reading

Second Life Week 32

WoW Losing Subscribers

For years I have heard how Second Life is losing subscribers. It is true, but the new users and returning users keep the number of people in SL about the same. SL has gone from 1 million plus to about 900,000 from 2007 to 2015.

Let’s try to put some perspective on that. Take a look at World of Warcraft’s numbers. In Q4-2014 there were 10 million subscribers. By the end of Q1-2015 it was down to 7.1 and now at the end of Q2-2015 it is 5.6. That is almost half the users in 6 months. (Reference – nice graph) In December 2005, 15 months after starting WoW, they passed 5.6 million. In October 2010 they were at 12.0 million, the peak I think.  Continue reading

Windows 10 – Not so Free?

The initial word on the coming Windows 10 was that it would be free. It is. But, I am seeing more and more articles talking about the cost of this FREE software. Forbes is the latest. See: ‘Free’ Windows 10 Has High Cost To Windows 7 And Windows 8 Users.

We know there are some exceptions to the ‘FREE’ offer. Servers, Enterprise versions, and RT version are excluded. Those folks pay. What we are finding out is Microsoft is evolving Windows into a new product, one we WILL have to pay for. Are you asking, WTF!?!  Continue reading

Windows 10 is Almost Here!

This morning I found a tiny icon on my Windows 7 Tool Bar. The official release date is July 29. Now I am wondering how well it will or won’t work with Second Life.

This icon is a link to a Microsoft promotional about Windows 10. According to it, you can reserve a copy of Windows 10. I supposed if you haven’t been following Win 10 development you may think this is some great free offer you need to jump on. I have no doubt a large number of people will.

Windows 10 is a free upgrade. Microsoft is no longer charging for operating system upgrades. They are following Apple and Google. Both have been giving away their upgrades. The idea is the original purchase and install of an operating system is made by the hardware manufacturer. After that all upgrades are free.  Continue reading

Windows 10 Update Week 21

The expected release is summer of this year. You can get preview copies of Win10 now. To qualify you are supposed to be a member of Windows Insiders.

You can find out more about the current release here: Windows 10-10122.

Those running it and Second Life™ are having problems. It is hard to tell what is going on as I can only find bits and pieces of people’s conversations as they try to resolve problems.  Continue reading

Windows 10 Coming

Did you know it will be FREE? What!?! That is the word on the street. PC World published in January that Windows 10 would be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8 users. See: Windows 10 will be a free upgrade. There is some question about Vista, but it looks to excluded.

I am somewhat surprised that Windows XP users are not included. But, I know that transferring users from XP to 7 and 8 is a technical pain. It is so bad I only ever move data over now. Installing over XP as an upgrade while a limited possibility, is usually a disaster. A new install is the practical and much easier way to go. Even the Microsoft transfer program doesn’t really work for an XP to 7 or 8 transfer.  Continue reading
