Another artist/merchant is contributing to Gala Phoenix’s legal fund by offering products and contributing all the proceeds. I have several pairs of N-Core shoes. I love them. So, I am thrilled to see N-Core participating.

AvaCon Abandons SLCC 2012

AvaCon is the group that arranged the Second Life™ Community Conventions. They provided the service to Linden Lab™ via a paid contractual arrangement. This year the contract terms were unacceptable to AvaCon. They are not saying what the deal buster was. Of course I haven’t heard anything out of Linden Lab either way.

Whether the Lab will retain another company, arrange the event in-house, or just forget it, we don’t know. But, it doesn’t look good. Someone will have to be hustling to arrange the convention.

Daniel Voyager apparently noticed the post on AvaCon’s blog. He has an article about it: SLCC 2012 Cancelled, which seems a bit overly pessimistic to me, but he may be right.

I am sure someone has a call into a contact within the Lab to see if they can get a statement. I don’t have those kinds of contacts within the Lab. I won’t give up all hope until I her something from a Lab spokesperson. I also won’t be betting against Daniel’s conclusion.

Fund Raiser DMCA Abuse

You may or may not know about some of the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) abuse that is happening. I’m a free market supporter and in general believe in protecting Intellectual Property Rights. But, this 2001 law in the USA, with similar laws in other counties, violates some of ideas expressed by the founding fathers of America. This law uses guilty until proven innocent logic, which is about as anti-American and anti-freedom as one can get. The remedy to prevent misuse, which opponents of the law said would never work, is a law suit for damages.

The problem is a DMCA Complaint is easy to file with almost no downside. Fighting it is difficult and there is no real up side. The recording industry and related companies liked that it was difficult to fight and easy to use. DMCA has consistently been misused for coercion and elimination of competition. We are seeing its misuse in Second Life™.

Dolphin Viewer False Positive

I am not a fan of Norton Anti-Virus. My opinion is that company is more about selling software than making an excellent product. Whatever the case, Lance has posted a new article on the Dolphin Viewer blog.

It seems Norton AV is detecting Dolphin Viewer 3’s slplugin.exe as a possible virus. Lance has explained what he has done to check that a virus has not snuck into any of his systems or the viewer files.

The latest Dolphin Viewer is not setting off my ESET/NOD32.

 

#SL ADITI Fixed

If you use the ADITI grid for proofing your various types of builds, you’ll be glad to know that Maestro Linden has just changed the status of SVC-7727 – Aditi grid problem. After changing my password to cause my inventory on Aditi to update, my inventory no longer saves changes made to it from session to session. The JIRA item is now marked FIXED.

I think I was part of some Linden experimenting because I saw my account on ADITI start working a couple of weeks ago. I had been dealing with problems on ADITI since the beginning of March and adding to the JIRA every so often.

Maestro suggests that your follow these steps and try ADITI again.

  1. Change your AGNI password, meaning change your login password. This affects all Second Life logins.
  2. Wait 24 hours.
  3. Log into ADITI.

That is simple enough. Of course if you see the problem after waiting the 24 hours, say so in the JIRA.

I changed my password today at about 3:15 PM SLT. I’ll try logging into ADITI sometime after 3:15 PM tomorrow.

 

Scripting User Group Closing?

For the last few weeks there has not been much going on in the Scripting User group that Kelly Linden chairs. The group has been getting smaller, fewer people attending. There has also been less to report about in regard to scripting. Today’s meeting was no exception.

The news we have been getting from Kelly has been more about server upgrades than scripting upgrades. So, Kelly is considering rolling the user group into Andrew Linden’s Server/Scripting User Group that meets Tuesday and Friday.

While uncertain, today’s meeting may have been the last scripting group meeting. Kelly is usually at Andrews meetings, so it will still be possible to discuss scripting problems with him.

Does this suggest that we will see a period of slower growth in the Linden Scripting Language? That is hard to say. Time will tell.
